Don’t you hate it when you mix two actors up? Usually it’s between actors that have a similar style and look, and really, it can happen to anyone. But if you’re an entertainment reporter, you should probably take some care to not mix up Renee Zellweger and Reese Witherspoon ... or, say, Samuel L. Jackson and Laurence Fishburne.
Unfortunately, that’s just what KTLA’s Sam Rubin did on Monday when he was interviewing Samuel L. Jackson. He totally mistook him for Reese Witherspoon. Just kidding! Rubin confused Jackson with fellow badass black actor Laurence Fishburne.
Jackson was on the air with Rubin to promote his latest film, MGM’s RoboCop remake, and the host asked the actor about his recent Super Bowl commercial.
Only problem is that Rubin was referring to the Matrix-inspired Kia ad that featured Fishburne. Samuel L. Jackson has been in some pretty cool stuff, but he has not sung opera in the back of a Kia for commercial purposes.
What ensued was absolute hilarity. Jackson shook his head in apparent disdain, shook his finger, and proclaimed, “You’re as crazy as the people on Twitter! I am NOT Laurence Fishburne!”
Jackson continued, pointing out that he’s a Capital One spokesperson. He said, "There's more than one black guy doing a commercial. I'm the 'What's in your wallet?' black guy ... Morgan Freeman is the other credit card black guy. You only hear his voice though so you probably won't confuse him with Laurence Fishburne."
Side note: Who could ever confuse Morgan Freeman’s voice with anyone else’s?
Anyway, Sam Rubin officially apologized to Samuel L. Jackson for his brain blip, and given Jackson’s fantastic, seemingly good-natured smack down of the local news anchor, I’m hoping all is good in Hollywood and race relations tonight.
Have you ever had a terrible mistaken identity moment?
