'Harry Potter' Author J.K. Rowling Regrets Hermione & Ron Love Story

harry potter deathly hallowsDid Hermione wind up with the wrong guy? Potter series author J.K. Rowling thinks so. In an interview with Emma Watson in Wonderland magazine -- and quoted in this weekend's London Sunday Times -- she says Hermione should have married Harry Potter, not Ron. Meanwhile, millions of Harry Potter fans spit out their tea. WOT!?! Rowling admits she let the relationship flower for personal reasons, but thinks now it was a literary mistake. Oh if only she could cast a magical spell that could turn back time!

I wrote the Hermione/Ron relationship as a form of wish fulfillment. That’s how it was conceived, really. For reasons that have very little to do with literature and far more to do with me clinging to the plot as I first imagined it, Hermione ended up with Ron.

I know, I’m sorry. I can hear the rage and fury it might cause some fans, but if I’m absolutely honest, distance has given me perspective on that. It was a choice I made for very personal reasons, not for reasons of credibility. Am I breaking people’s hearts by saying this? I hope not.

Whatever, Rowling. You just turned fans' lives upside-down, that's all. Although, I always did wonder why she'd made that choice. I have to agree when Rowling says she thinks Ron and Hermione would have needed marriage counseling in order to make their marriage work. I always imagined Hermione someday tiring of Ron and leaving him for Potter, who was always a much better match for her power and passion. I'm not the only one. Rowling says, "I think there are fans out there who know that too and who wonder whether Ron would have really been able to make her happy.” Mmm, no. Not long-term. She's right.

Do you agree that Rowling made a mistake in pairing off Hermione and Ron?

It did seem odd, also Harry and Ginny almost never spent any time together their love story seemed way to forced.

Whats done is done though.

Hermione and Harry would have been too obvious.

I am SO sick of this attention whore! First 'Dumbledore is gay.' now this?! ARG! She can't take it that people have moved on some. Also GINNY had a HUGE crush on Harry starting in her year 1!

It worked fine. Harry can be with Ron's sister or something! Nobody honestly gives to S's about it-,- and guys.... IT IS NOT REAL Wtf "they would need marriage counselling, they would get bored". They aren't real! & who cares wht happens after the last pge turns.

Harry needed a surrogate family. He needed to be part of a big wizarding family to feel like a complete person. So I think that Harry and Ginny make sense together and would be happy together.

Hermione though, needed somebody smarter and more interesting than Ron. Ron needs someone undemanding, that he wouldn't be jealous of.

Judging from Hermione's prom date, she could attract someone from the wider wizarding community. I always thought she would divorce Ron after he let her down too many times.

She needs to leave well enough alone. She wrote a great series. But she's going to destroy it all.

This broke ny heart. Ron never had any confidence in himself and you can see that throughout the series. He wasn't the brains and he wasn't a hero. He made mistakes because of his insecurities - but he came back and fought regardless. For Hermione to have ended up with Harry would be to stereotypical of the girl. She never conformed to any of those standards so why be the Hero's prize instead of her own character?

Look, it's not like marrying Harry would have diminished any of her qualities but ending up with Ron was real. She, the extrodinary Hermione, chose plain old Ron. It's beautiful and hopeful, and I think they'd be very good together.

Not only was this a mistake, but the fact that there was no animosity between Harry and Draco there at the end was just too tidy a happy ending. Rowling substituted romanticism for realism. As an artist, she should have known better.
