Madonna

Well, slap me silly and call me a bitch. I had no idea Miley Cyrus could actually sing. Yeah, well, do I look like the kind of person who watches Hannah Montana? And when I saw Miley at the VMAs I was all, Whaaa?? Why this chick be famous? But take away the tongue and the twerk and Miley's got it going on. Hey, kid, ya got talent! Have you ever thought about being a singer? Heh. Miley performed on what must be the ultimate challenge for today's singers: MTV's Unplugged. I think the last time I saw it, Nirvana was on the stage. So that tells you a little bit about where I'm at. When they say unplugged, I presume they mean no lip synching, no pre-recorded tracks, just you and your damn throat. And Miley knocked it out of the park.

Okay, so Miley is no Etta James. She's more of a Madonna type -- not the greatest voice in the world, but it's her personality and charisma and performance ability that sucks you in. Miley's big blue eyes really connect with an audience. And she has the flattest stomach in history.

Speaking of Madonna, she showed up for the last tune, a mashup of "We Can't Stop/Don't Tell Me" and while they occasionally gyrated like a couple of chicks who just won't get off the karaoke stage, hey, these two broads know how to entertain. Madonna's still got more groove in her hips than pop stars half her age but seems to be passing the torch gracefully. Miley's tongue must have gotten antsy because it made an appearance at the end. You can see the entire performance here.

Miley worked through her hits from the Bangerz album and also sang her rendition of Dolly Parton's "Jolene" and gurrrl it was good! Miley digs into that song despite the fact that I'm sure she's never had to beg any woman not to take her man.

So that's what Miley can do when she's not desperately trying to "shock." Kudos, Miley!

Did you watch the show?
