'50 Shades' Release Shakeup Shows Just How Big the Movie Will Be

Flicks 8

dakota johnson jamie dornanThe Fifty Shades of Grey movie's fight to make it big at the box office next year may have just gotten a bit easier ... See, back in November, we heard the film's current release date of February 13, 2015 meant it would have to do battle with another "chick flick": Nicholas Sparks' The Longest Ride, which was set to open that same day. Apparently, this was planned to make the sexy flick a steamy "date night" pick for couples, making The Longest Ride appear to be a less appealing, girls' night choice.

Well, now, perhaps in response to Universal's move, The Longest Ride has been postponed 'til April 3, 2015 ... and instead, the studio behind the film, FOX, plans to release Poltergeist on Valentine's weekend instead. (How romantic. I guess that's for self-proclaimed V-Day haters.) No matter, though. I can only see this as Fifty Shades being set up for even MORE success!

Really, I'm not quite sure why either studio would've ever wanted to have their chick flicks (cuz let's be honest, date night or not, that's what Fifty is) to go up against one another. Depending on how bad the early reviews for either came out, it most likely would've ended up a split vote. And I'd bet that's why The Longest Ride got bumped. It's also a sign that at least some of those suits over at FOX are shaking in their Tom Fords that Fifty Shades is gonna rake in some major dough!

And now that Fifty Shades only has to "do battle" opposite Poltergeist, it's obviously going to be the big winner! And more cash at the box office means happier studio execs, and happier studio execs will end up green-lighting sequels (cough Fifty Shades Darker, Fifty Shades Freed), which means this news could result in a real win-win for fans!

Now, my fingers are only crossed that any other titles set to release that weekend are a gross-out, Dumb and Dumber-ish flick for the single guys and a kiddo movie for families. Then, we'll be all set!

Do you think this is a good sign for the film's success?

Why in the world would they do a sequel or movie trilogy with 50 Shades, when they're doing all 3 books in one movie? Its too much when movie trilogies end up splitting the last book into 2 movies for more money.

Allison Schmidt - that was actually a rumor, it's going to be 3 films as long as the first one is a success. They're not combining them all.

They moved the film AWAY from big competition like Marvel's film, and The World Cup which is in the summertime because they knew it would be too much competition, so it really doesn't look like they're all that confident in it. Not only did they move it, but they moved it Valentines Day weekend of all weekends, AND are producing 2 rated versions of it to target more audiences. Sounds like desperation to me. It's only competition thus far would've been the Nicholas Sparks film. Those don't particularly get super high box office earnings, at least not like something like Marvel's films, but it makes sense why they moved the Nicholas Sparks one since this trilogy is so popular. I know I personally won't be at the theater seeing this film. I'm a huge fan of the books but this cast is just awful. Nothing like the characters in the books, and I don't want them tainting it for me.

Ugh Dakota Johnson is not attractive and always looks so old and worn. So not the fresh-faced, naturally beautiful, innocent and youthful Anastasia. And wtf is up with her hair? Shes def not Ana.

I don't understand why people think Dakota doesn't match Anastasia. Everyone knows that 50 Shades of Grey was originally a Twilight fanfiction novel, right? And written with Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson's portrayal of Bella and Edward in mind? Dakota seems pretty close to what I would have imagined Bella or Anastasia to be. I'm not a fan of the books but COME ON, this constant trashing of Dakota is just nasty.

I still think that they should have a different cast for the second and third. Give some other actors a chance, and see who do best.

I think she matches Anastasia almost perfectly... her skin complexion and build is exactly how is described in the books. Honestly, the only thing I can point out that doesn't match Anastasia's description is Johsnon's eyes.. Anastasia's were describes as large eyes almost too big for her face. If anything.. I think Christian's description is shot. What's his face would have been better. This guy looks too much like a mommy's pretty boy.

Only big difference I see in Dakota as Anastasia's was Ana was described as having large blue eyes - almost too big for her face & Dakota has small eyes. Otherwise, she has the complexion and build as it was written in the book. If anything, it's Christian who is way off. They would have done better with the last one -- at least he could have pulled off the twisted, dark Christian. This guy looks like a momma's pretty boy. He doesn't excite any of my senses lol I'd feel like I'd have to be the one teaching him stuff :-P
