As progressive as we would like to think this country is, there are too many instances that remind us how ignorant some people still are. Among the most recent, childhood star Tamera Mowry revealed she endured racist attacks because of her romance with a white Fox News reporter. It's heartbreaking to say the least.
During an interview for Oprah: Where Are They Now, the Sister Sister star tearfully shared the outrageous racial slurs that have been hurled her way since marrying Adam Housely. She said of one particularly hurtful Twitter attack:
I get called 'white man's whore.' The new one was 'back in the day you cost $300, but now you're giving it to him for free.'
Tamera finds this all especially dismaying since she is biracial herself -- her mother is black and her father is white. "My mom is a beautiful black woman and my dad is an amazing white man, and I grew up seeing a family," she said. "I didn't grow up saying, 'Oh, that's a white man.'"
Those small-minded attackers have even brought her sister Tia into their hate-filled bile: "They say, 'Oh, Tia's a true black woman because she married a black man,'" Tamera said of her twin who married actor Cory Hardrict. "Oh -- I'm less of a black person because I married white?"
Shockingly, Tia revealed that she gets the opposite response. People tell her that Tamera has done it right by marrying a white man unlike her. It's pure lunacy.
It's really such a shame that people feel this way, but I would be lying if I said I was completely surprised. There are people of all backgrounds and ethnicities who still hold very racist and close-minded ideas about whom people should date. Though it pains her, Tamera isn't going to let it deter her from celebrating and talking about her loving husband and beautiful family (they welcomed son Aden 14 months ago).
My best advice to her is to focus on the positive things in her life -- a wonderful sister, great husband and child, and those fans who lift her up. Those ignorant few aren't worth her tears or time of day.
