Because apparently we can’t have enough Phil Robertson controversy, the Internets exploded with rage today after learning that the controversial Duck Dynasty star said something controversial in 2009. It appears that video has surfaced in which Phil advocates for young men to marry 16-year-old girls.
The reality star has been the center of a media brouhaha the past week or two for saying in a GQ interview that he believed homosexuality to be a sin. He was subsequently suspended from A&E, and last Friday was reinstated to the show.
So now everyone’s upset about this video that surfaced in which Phil says that the best time to marry a woman is when she’s 15 or 16, so she’ll “pick your ducks.”
Mainly because these boys are waiting until they get to be about 20 years old before they marry 'em. Look, you wait until they get to be 20 years old, the only picking that's going to take place is your pocket. You got to marry these girls when they are about 15 or 16, they'll pick your ducks.
What’s funny to me is that all the Robertson-haters are up in arms about this, but I swear Phil has said this kind of thing on the show before. It’s part of his back-woodsy charm that fans of Duck Dynasty know and love. He’s like the perfect grandpa that is sometimes crotchety on the surface, but ultimately a softie for his loved ones, and of course things were better in the good old days.

Phil also believes the world would be a better place without cellphones. He hunts and eats squirrels. His bride, Miss Kay (who was 16 when they married), shamelessly tells the world that she loves to eat squirrel brains.
It’s a different world than a lot of us are used to, which is probably one of the reasons the show is such a smashing success.
Does anybody really think that people are going to go start getting married during their sophomore year of high school? Not even Phil and Kay’s own kids did that. Jase and Missy were 19 and 20 when they got married. Willie and Korie met in elementary school, and tied the knot a year out of high school. Jep’s wife Missy was 20 when she said, “I do.” They were all young, sure, but not 15!
Ultimately, these kind of controversies only benefit the show and A&E. They’ve already broken viewership records -- how many more people do you think will tune in now just to see what all the fuss is about?
Grab some popcorn, new viewers. It’s an awesome show.
