Johnny DeppThere aren't many actors whose mere presence in a movie trailer will send me lunging for the play button, but Johnny Depp is for sure at the top of that very short list. It's not that Depp starring in a film necessarily guarantees it's going to be great (The Tourist, anyone?), but I'm almost always intrigued by the roles he chooses, particularly now that he's been saying that he plans to retire from acting soon.

Which is all to say, I'm totally fascinated by the trailer that just dropped for Depp's upcoming film Transcendence. In it, Depp plays a renowned artificial intelligence scientist obsessed with creating a sentient machine --- and as for what else happens in the movie, well, this video is called a teaser for a good reason, because it definitely leaves us wanting more. Based on the movie description, however, I'm guessing Depp's character is going to be memorable in all kinds of disturbing ways.

Transcendence has a great-looking pedigree: it's executive produced by Christopher Nolan and is the directorial debut of Nolan's longtime cinematographer, Wally Pfister, who won an Oscar for Inception. Rebecca Hall, Paul Bettany, Kate Mara, Cillian Murphy and Morgan Freeman are co-starring, and it's scheduled to hit theaters on April 18th.

Here's the official synopsis:

Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him.

However, in their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed—to be a participant in his own transcendence. For his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and best friend Max Waters (Paul Bettany), both fellow researchers, the question is not if they can...but if they should. Their worst fears are realized as Will’s thirst for knowledge evolves into a seemingly omnipresent quest for power, to what end is unknown. The only thing that is becoming terrifyingly clear is there may be no way to stop him.

Sounds pretty cool, right? Check out the enigmatic teaser:

Oooh, I like those final lines: "Some scientists refer to this as the singularity. I call it transcendence."

If you prefer Morgan Freeman's smooth voiceovers, Warner Bros. has released one other clip that hints at the spooky future of the human race:

So exciting! Between this and Jupiter Ascending, it's looking like 2014 may be the year of awesome sci-fi films.

What do you think of the Transcendence teasers? Does the fact that Johnny Depp's in it make you extra interested?
