When you are a married celebrity, breakup rumors are par for the course. Even at the hint of trouble, the tabloids and blogs will jump all over it. And Ellen DeGeneres is certainly no exception. Recently her marriage to Portia de Rossi was called into question. An entertainment magazine claimed that credible sources had revealed that the five-year union was in shambles. Stars often don’t respond to articles like this because they are taking the so-called "high road.” But this often just fuels the speculation and rumors. Ellen, however, broke the mold and handled this perfectly. Take a look.
Funny and classy all at the same time. While we fans often rabidly devour these kind of reports, it's easy to forget that they could be devastating to the subjects. Many celebrities say they avoid their own press for that exact reason. Think about how hard it would be to read awful things about yourself.
Every aspect of their lives is fodder for the press -- dates, weddings, divorces, their kids, and much more. You don't have to be a die-hard Britney Spears fan to sympathize with what she endured during her now infamous breakdown. The poor girl was made out to be a complete loon. I've often wondered if the press coverage itself played a part.
And what about those stars unlucky enough to be a part of a cheating scandal? Poor Elin Nordegren didn't just have to suffer through the end of her marriage to Tiger Woods. She had to deal with the fact the whole world knew every detail of his many indiscretions. To say that was humiliating is an understatement.
Though, I suppose prying eyes are just a normal part of celebrity these days. Fortunately, they were dead wrong about Ellen and Portia this time. It's great that she could respond with such humor. It was classic Ellen, don't you think?
What do you think is the best way to respond to a nasty rumor?
