Royals. They're just like us. And this time, it's actually true. Cast members from the famous British series Downton Abbey revealed how the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Kate Middleton, became huge fans of the show after Prince George was born. Cast members Rob James-Collier (Thomas Barrow), Lesley Nicol (Mrs. Patmore), Allen Leech (Tom Branson), and Laura Carmichael (Lady Edith Crawley) appeared on Watch What Happens Live! last Tuesday and made the royal confession.
Leech told Andy Cohen, "I was actually at an event last week with Prince William, now the Duke of Cambridge, so yeah -- I met him last week, shook his hand ... He actually said, 'I’m a big fan of the show -- only now that my wife’s had a baby.'"
Can you imagine the royal family gathering around to watch Downton Abbey on their TV screens just like the rest of us? And I'm sure their point of view on the series may be far different than the rest of us commoners'.
Leech went on to surmise, “Obviously he’s got a lot of down time ... So [Kate]’s got him watching this. ‘You’re going to watch it with me!’” Can't imagine that the couple has too much down time with their royal duties and adorable newborn, but regardless, it's a relaxing escape that the two of them can enjoy together if they have to spend extra time cooped up alone.
And imagine their commentary! Most of you are probably well aware that Downton Abbey is about the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants in the post-Edwardian era. The estate itself is a huge, sprawling business, and it's a fascinating look at the daily lives of folks who appear act as "royals" in their own right. The Crawleys are like the king, queen, and princesses of the house, with tradition and blood lines and wealth and fancy dinners dominating their priorities, and it's a fascinating look at how the 1 percenters lived back in the day. Obviously it's fiction, but it'd still be fascinating to hear what Kate and William could possibly take away from the show.
Do their servants and guards get involved in mini soap operas with their personal lives? Did William and Harry grow up with a servant father figure like Carson? Is the Queen anything like the hilariously old-fashioned, quippy Dowager Countess? (Let's hope so!) Is there anything Kate can relate to as a new mother now that Lady Mary Crawley is a new mother as well? Come on, both of their sons are named George! Kate and William are simply meant to be fans of this show.
And could there be a potential royal cameo on the show in the near future? One can only dream -- imagine how awesome that'd be. I guess the most we can hope for is that Will, Kate, and George visit the set one day, someone is able to film it, and we'd have the privilege of seeing what kind of magic that encounter would create! Just picture baby George meeting baby George. Come on, it's the stuff that the Internet was made for.
