Fifty Shades of Grey may now be in production in Vancouver, but we're still hearing new casting announcements every day! Yesterday, the big news was that Rita Ora would be playing Mia, Christian Grey's sister. Now comes news from The Hollywood Reporter that Marcia Gay Harden will play Dr. Grace Trevelyan Grey, the adoptive mother of Christian, Mia, and Elliot Grey (played by Luke Grimes). What a perfect pick!
Although it's a supporting role in every way, and I can't imagine her having all that much screen time, I'd think bringing Marcia on board was a wise move for the studio. Mostly because she has more recognizability and credibility than anyone else in the cast so far, save maybe Jamie Dornan, who's definitely more famous across the pond ...

Consider Marcia's recent credentials: She recently finished shooting Woody Allen’s latest film, Magic in the Moonlight, and appears on HBO’s The Newsroom and ABC’s comedy Trophy Wife. Not to mention that she's an Academy Award winner, for crying out loud! (She nabbed the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role as Lee Krasner in 2000's Pollock. And was nominated for Mystic River in 2003.)
In other words, the steamy flick is super-lucky to have someone with her acting chops and experience. Not that Marcia playing Dr. Grey could possibly make or break the movie, but her involvement definitely adds more integrity to the project. Cheers to that!
What do you think about Marcia Gay Harden as Dr. Grey? Do you think her involvement adds more credibility to the film?
