Happy news, Downton Abbey fans! The show has just been renewed for a fifth season, and even though folks in good ol' United States haven't yet been able to check out the fourth, which just wrapped up airing in the UK, guess the ratings are solid enough that the producers are willing to give it another go. Grab your nearest servant and give them a big bear hug!
The fourth season averaged 11.8 million viewers in the UK; it's the top-ranking drama across the pond. The series is also the most-watched drama in PBS history, with last season's finale averaging 8.2 million fans. Back at home, more than 24 million viewers watched the third season in the US, making it the most-watched drama in PBS history. Needless to say, a fifth season isn't much of a surprise. But still, it's pretty awesome news.
"Audiences have enjoyed their regular Sunday evening visits back to Downton once again this autumn and we are thrilled to produce a new series of the show next year," said executive producer Gareth Neame in a statement. "We promise all the usual highs and lows, romance, drama, and comedy played out by some of the most iconic characters on television. All the actors and makers of the show continue to be humbled by the extraordinary audience response and want to take the show from strength to strength next year."
That all sounds well and good, but do you think there is any chance that the fifth season would air at the same time in the US and UK? Fat chance, but one can only hope. Looks like yet another year of avoiding the Internet so you won't read about the spoilers sure to come in this fascinating, addicting show. Evident from seasons past, it seems that the January 5 premiere date here in the US won't have much effect on the ratings. I for one will sadly be tuning in even though there are sneaky ways to watch the show online. Just goes to show how beloved the Crawley clan is between these two countries!
Since information is immediate nowadays, a quick search on Google easily reveals what fans in the US will see during the show's fourth season. Some of the plot revelations sure are scandalous, while others are rather controversial. What could they shock us with next in season 5? Who else will be killed off? The possibilities are endless, and I can't wait to see what happens, even though I'm still pretty impatient for season 4 before we start all this speculation over season 5!
Anyway, be sure to check out the season 4 trailer:
