One half of arguably one of the most famous lesbian couples in the world made a shocking revelation when she sat down with James Lipton and her Arrested Development castmates for Thursday’s Inside the Actors Studio.

Portia de Rossi admitted, “I just didn't want to be a lesbian ... I'd never met one for a start, and I just thought they were strange and that they hated men and they were very serious, and I had these ridiculous images in my head and there were no out celebrities or politicians or anybody that I could look to and go, 'Oh, I could be like that.'"

Wha ...? But Portia seems so comfortable in her own skin! I never would have guessed in a million years that she ever questioned her sexuality, because it just seems like it is what it is with her. It’s not all she is, but it’s who she is, and I’ve never gotten the impression that she struggled with it.

Ok, so she was married to a man once, documentary filmmaker Mel Metcalfe, but I just figured that was for a green card (which she ended up not getting through him) and companionship. She even later said, “It just obviously wasn’t right for me.”

It just goes to show that the heart wants what it wants, regardless of what we think we’re supposed to want. When two people are drawn together and can be content and at ease with each other and just generally happy, then things like age, race, religion, and maybe even gender don’t matter.

Portia’s come a long way from nervously stepping out with Ellen as a lesbian. Although she had been informally outed when she was photographed with an ex, her first very public appearance as a lesbian was with Ellen at 2005 Golden Globes.

Ellen and I had been together for a month, and I was very, very nervous going to that, because I knew I was going to meet up with her after the show. And that there was press ... That was the first time we stepped out together as a couple, but for me, it was the first time I stepped out as a gay woman, really.

And how does her paramour feel about all of this? On her show this week, Ellen talked to guest Kaley Cuoco about her whirlwind romance with tennis champ Ryan Sweeting, and shared:

I know what it's like, because you know, Portia and I met [and] we kind of moved in within two weeks, and we've been together for nine years ... when you feel it, you just know it.

Are you surprised by Portia's revelations?
