In case all of y'all didn't know, Chelsea Handler and Reese Witherspoon are sorta besties. (I know this not because I know them, per se, but because I've seen Witherspoon's hilarious cameos on After Lately.) Anyway, since these guys are BBFFs (blonde best friends forever), it made perfect sense for Handler to be the one to present Witherspoon with an Elle Women in Hollywood Award on Monday night.
And since these two are such close pals, it also makes perfect sense that they'd share the same sense of bawdy, no-holds barred humor Handler is famous for -- which explains why Witherspoon was able to laugh it up when her friend brought up a certain drunken arrest that took place back in April.
Yup, that's right -- Handler went there. You remember the incident, right?? Just in case, a quick rundown: Basically, Witherspoon and her husband, talent agent Jim Toth, were driving home from a party when Toth got pulled over on the suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Witherspoon was also arrested, because she (dramatically and loudly) ignored a police officer when he told her, several times, to remain in their car. Oh yeah, AND the whole thing was caught on tape. Or, as Handler put it from the podium at the awards ceremony (where Reese was in the audience just a few feet away from the stage):
"Personally, as a true friend, my favorite project of hers was an overlooked short film that she made earlier this year. She plays a very inebriated housewife defending her inebriated husband. "And if you haven't seen it, you can go on YouTube."
Well, Reese had that one coming! And the cool thing is, she knows it -- that's why she had the grace and good humor to crack up right along with everybody else, at her own expense. Hats off to Handler for expertly making light of a messy situation -- I'm sure Witherspoon would do the same for her. That's what friends are for!
Do you think Reese Witherspoon handled the jokes about her arrest well?
