Rashida Jones Accused of 'Slut Shaming' for Telling It Like It Is

GossipMonger 20

Rashida Jones has just been catapulted in my mind from talented and cute actress who held her own beside Amy Poehler in Parks and Recreation to the big sister every actress in Hollywood desperately needs. And as the older and wiser sibling, Rashida is sometimes going to say things that Miley and Kim (who's actually four years younger than the TV star if you can believe it) desperately need to hear but aren't always going to like.

Ready, Miley? Ready, Kim? Rashida has some choice words for you and she has as much of a right to say them as you do to Tweet countless photos of yourself with half of your clothes off.

The actress, who has been known to speak her mind in the past, took to Twitter this week and posted a series of funny rants that managed to piss off a bunch of people. Her first post spurred chat that she was slut-shaming her younger colleagues. Rashida never actually outs the celebs that are on her mind (though we can certainly speculate):

This week's celeb news takeaway: she who comes closest to showing the actual inside of her vagina is most popular. #stopactinglikewhores

Rashida then followed up with the posts:

Let me clarify. I don't shame ANYone for anything they choose to do with their lives and bodies...

BUT I think we ALL need to take a look at what we are accepting as "the norm."

There is a whole generation of young women watching. Sure, be SEXY but leave something to the imagination.

Hallelujah. This advice and criticism comes to us straight from a young woman who, like Kim and Miley, definitely doesn't lack in the looks department, but has chosen to build a name for herself based on her talent and not on how great she looks dressed in a white thong swimsuit.

I understand people may take offense to the hashtag she uses in her first Tweet, but I think it's going overboard to say she is "slut-shaming." She is reminding women to consider themselves as more than sex objects. She's reminding us all that we're asking for trouble by thinking it's normal to post tons of photos of yourself nearly naked, as if Instagram-ing your body parts is as much of a worthwhile hobby as playing tennis or reading.

I hope more women like Rashida will step up in Hollywood and serve as positive role models for the young girls who follow their every move.

What do you think of Rashida's tweets? Was she slut-shaming?

It is slut-shaming. Aaaand it should be. Plaster yourself in everyone's face half naked, and you open yourself up to criticism. Welcome to the internet.

I think a better hashtag would have been "respect yourself".

I never understand why women chose to objectify themselves by showing their crotch & boobs. Don't they realize that they will never be taken seriously again??  If they want to do that-at least get paid for it..... (think porn) lol!!!

^^^All true. Don't want people to call you a whore? Don't act like one. This isn't about slut-shaming, which would be knocking someone for how they live their lives. This is about presenting an image of yourself, particularly if you're famous. And much like Jessica Simpson learned about "playing dumb", Miley and her ilk will learn that if you put an image out there of yourself, be prepared to be stuck with it.

Why is it acceptable to run around half naked?  When did people lose all sense of class and decorum?  Just because there's a platform to showcase your various states of undress doesn't mean that anyone wants to see it.  I don't consider that entertainment.  I don't care what Kim K's butt looks like post baby.  I don't want to see Miley simulating sex acts on inanimate objects.  What is most alarming to me, though, is that the "sluts" aren't upset about being called sluts.  They're pissy because "everyone else is a prude" and infringing on their rights to be naked.  Grow up.  Slut it up all you want, but keep it where it belongs.  I am sick to death of turning on my TV and computer only to see another damn near naked "celebrity."  If you have to try so hard to be noticed or relevant, the problem isn't with your audience, it's with you.  If you have talent, let it speak.  As Sinead so rightly said to Miley, it's not necessary to prostitute yourself if you have actual talent.
