I can't lie -- when I heard that Charlie Hunnam had dropped out of the Fifty Shades of Grey movie, I couldn't have been more relieved. I'm sorry, but that dude just doesn't do it for me -- or at least not in Christian Grey's role, a part I picture being played by someone a bit more polished and way less scruffy and blah.
Everyone wants to know who will wind up snagging the gig the second time around. Of course, there's speculation over whether Robert Pattinson replacing Charlie as Christian is a possibility or not.
At this point, there are probably a bunch of names being thrown around as potential recasts, but as much as I dig Rob, giving him Christian Grey's role is just a really, really horrible idea.
I mean, yeah, he's way better than Charlie, but still -- the last thing he needs is to take on a part that will follow him around for the rest of his life just like his Edward Cullen persona. He's probably going to have a hard enough time trying to get anyone to stop associating him with Twilight as it is, so can you imagine how branded he'll become if he takes on Fifty Shades?
And honestly, I'm not sure he'd even accept the role if it's offered to him. He's Robert Pattinson, for crying out loud -- why would he want to take a part that wasn't his to begin with? Whoever does wind up playing Christian is going to look a little desperate since he will know that he wasn't the first choice for the role. (And Rob is anything but desperate.)
I'm sure plenty of dudes will pop up as possible Christians over the course of the next few weeks. But it's probably safe to go ahead and take Rob out of the running. I'm willing to bet money that he'll probably laugh in the face of casting directors if the offer ever presents itself.
Do you think Rob should replace Charlie? If not -- who should?
