'50 Shades of Grey' Close to Casting Major Supporting Role

jennifer ehleMove over, Dakota Johnson and Charlie Hunnam, cuz a new star may be close to signing on to Fifty Shades of Grey! Jennifer Ehle is reportedly in negotiations with Universal and Focus Features to play Carla, aka Anastasia Steele's mom, described as "a strong Southern woman on her fourth marriage," according to Deadline.com, which first reported the news.

You may recognize Jennifer from Zero Dark ThirtyContagion, and The Ides of March, but she perhaps most memorably starred as Elizabeth Bennet opposite Colin Firth's Mr. Darcy in the classic BBC miniseries version of Pride & Prejudice. And at just 43, I'd say she's baaaarely believably "old" enough to play a 21-year-old Ana's mom, but of course that's Hollywood for you!

It also bears noting that nothing's written in stone, and no official announcement has been made. Similar reports surfaced about Joe Wright directing, but those talks ultimately ended with Wright walking and Sam Taylor-Johnson signing on. So anything can happen while the negotiation process is still ongoing, but I wouldn't be surprised if Jennifer and the studios reach an agreement. Aside from the fact that she's a bit young, she does have a resemblance to Dakota that would make her believable enough as her mother ... And the producers should be thrilled to nab her, being that she's obviously a kick-ass actress the flick would be lucky to have in a supporting role

Fingers crossed this all comes together sooner rather than later, so we can start hearing even more news about the rest of the cast. Katherine Kavanagh? Elliot Grey? Bueller? Anyone, anyone?

What do you think about Jennifer Ehle as Ana's mom? Do you think this is a sign we're gonna hear more about supporting cast soon?
