When Merritt Wever took the stage at the 2013 Emmys to accept her award for Best Actress in a Comedy Series for her role in Nurse Jackie, I don't think anyone thought, "I need to brace myself. This is going to be an epic speech." But, turns out, that's exactly what Wever's speech was on Sunday night: Epic. And confusing. And weird. And one of the most delightful things ever to come out of an actor's mouth at an awards show, where names very few people know of are oft said hurriedly over swelling orchestra music.
For those of you who missed Wever, here's a transcript of speech:
Thanks so much. Thank you so much. I gotta go, bye.
At the time, it was hard to tell if Wever was trying to be funny or if she was just genuinely nervous, but she explained her short and sweet speech in the press room afterwards, saying, "It's hard to do those. I know I wanted to thank a lot of people. I don't know … I'm scared because it was unexpected, so I don't know how I feel yet. I mean, I have therapy next week."
It's hard to believe that there's an actress who was nominated for such a prestigious award who truly didn't think she had a chance in hell of winning. Sure, she was the underdog, but usually even underdogs have a look of astonishment and a few people they want to thank filed away somewhere in the back of their mind. Not Merritt. She was fully expecting to leave the Emmys as nothing more than a nominee.
I have a feeling we'll be seeing a lot more of Merritt in the upcoming months, and I think that's just dandy. She may not be the most eloquent thespian on the block, but she possesses something most actresses don't: Humility. Oh, and awesomeness. Congrats, Merritt!
