Did Miley Cyrus' awful week just get a teeny bit better? Just days after he was spotted kissing and leaving a Los Angeles house with gorgeous Mexican actress Eiza Gonzalez, Liam Hemsworth has reportedly told his ex-fiance that she can keep the stunning $250,000 engagement ring he gave her a little more than one year ago.
The symbolism behind this gesture seems even more potent since we know Liam didn't just swing by Tiffany's and pick out the first gorgeous ring he could find. He worked closely with designer Neil Lane to create something romantic and special that he thought would suit Miley -- something that just happens to be a 3.5-carat cushion cut diamond set in a vintage gold setting with diamonds.
First of all, assuming we all agree he had the right to ask for the ring back (and I'm not sure we all agree on that), why did Liam let her keep it?
Is he really one of those rare, upstanding gentlemen whom we are seeing less and less of in Hollywood? If so, fantastic. In my opinion, it's only right to let her keep the ring. An engagement ring is a gift that is given to show the love you feel at that time. There's no guarantee a relationship is going to work out and the person who gives the gift shouldn't expect it back.
Okay, but something else is bugging me here. While Miley doesn't seem like she's been a picnic to deal with lately, Liam has, reportedly, not been the ideal mate, either (cough, cough, January Jones). In addition to the text controversy surrounding the Mad Men actress, there was also talk that Liam was spotted kissing a mysterious brunette at the Toronto Film Festival after-party in early September, just days before he reportedly hung out with actress Eiza Gonzalez at a big fight in Las Vegas. It's all well and good -- these two are young, after all. If they aren't meant to be, so be it. But is Liam's generosity when it comes to the ring a result of his guilty conscience?
And the ultimate question is: just what do you think Miley will do with the ring? She certainly doesn't need the money, and the damn beautiful thing carries with it so many good and awful memories of a failed union that I couldn't imagine actually keeping it. Will she pawn it and donate the money to charity? I'm sure it won't be long before we find out.
Why do you think Liam is letting her keep the ring? And what do you think Miley will do with it?
