As much as people suspected that Kim Kardashian frauded Kris Humphries into marrying her, I believe he went into not for love, but for fame and fortune. So his latest move involving the enormous engagement ring he gave her and then demanded back isn't exactly surprising. It is totally tacky, though.
If you recall, the ring was huge -- 20 carats, and estimated at $2 million. It was ridiculous that he wanted back, when she did, in fact, marry him; and some say she even paid for herself. But he got it. So what's he doing with it now? He's auctioning it off, hoping to rake in the cash. Did I mention tacky?
According to Us Weekly, he has listed it for a sale at Christie's auction house in New York to take place on October 15. While Christie's won't disclose the seller's name, they did confirm the ring's dimensions, which are identical to Kim's. And let's face it, there just aren't many rings like that out there in the world. A source told the magazine:
It is 100 percent the same ring. Kim has been waiting for the day he would auction it. Everyone always asked what Kim did with the ring -- she silently gave it back over a year ago! And Kris waited until the divorce was final to sell it.
It's not that he should keep it for the rest of his life, but to auction it off so publicly when people are sure to know it's her ring is just low. He could have found a private broker to sell it someday down the line, but not this way, not so soon. The only saving grace here is that Christie's said the ring is being offered "with a portion of the proceeds to benefit a charity." Let's find out how big of a portion before we pat him on the back though. If it's not all or close to it, then it just seems like a face-saving move.
At least he's not going to cash in too large, as sources say he's not likely to get even close to $2 million for the ring, more like $300,000-500,000. Hope it's worth it to him.
Do you think it's tacky for Kris Humphries to auction off Kim's engagement ring like this?
