Wow, people are really really angry about the casting choices for the lead roles in Fifty Shades of Grey. So much so that some very ardent fans started an online petition, and can you believe it ... 50,000 people have signed it. The petition over at Change.org is demanding that the leads, Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson, be replaced with Matt Bomer and Alexis Bledel.
Apparently being extremely attached to the caps lock button, the petition states: "Matt Bomer is the PERFECT DESCRIPTION OF CHRISTIAN GREY AND ALEXIS BLEDEL IS THE PERFECT ACTRESS TO REPRESENT ANASTASIA STEELE and if THEY ARE NOT, NOBODY WILL BE. And I read the whole trilogy and I can assure that Matt is the perfect actor for this movie and Alexis too. So please PLEASE, all of the GREYsessed and Bomerettes in the world NEED those actors. They always will be for us the Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele. WE CAN DO ANYTHING GUYS, ANYTHING."
Wow, folks, wow. Has it really come to this?
Look, I was just as shocked as anyone about the casting announcement. But we really have to hope that the producers and creators behind the movie know what they're doing. Or else we'd simply lose our minds with worry (if that hasn't happened yet already ...). I honestly do think that chemistry will trump in this movie, and if they saw something between Charlie and Dakota, well, that's what's most important. I'm sure you've seen flicks before when, even though the leads were super-hot, there was just no chemistry. That's going to make or break this movie.
Plus, Alexis Bledel is 31 (Ana is 21 in the first book) and she's probably busy planning her nuptials to Vincent Kartheiser. Matt Bomer could be preoccupied with other projects. In general, maybe these two simply were not interested. They may not have even been approached. And people really do have to get over it.
With all this hype, Matt's even responded to the fact that there's a petition about him. "I'm so grateful for the fans and touched," Bomer told ETonline. "I'm looking forward to seeing the movie with Charlie and Dakota." Awww, such a nice, diplomatic answer. Clearly he has faith in the movie gods that Charlie and Dakota will work out, so why can't we? Seriously, clean Charlie up and dye his hair copper and it could work. Just look at him!
I suppose there are a lot worse things going on in the world than this recent casting news (or is there?), but I'm hoping that fans who are so up in arms about the two leads can just at least wait until the movie comes out. And can you blame Matt and Alexis for perhaps trying to stay away from this much publicity and criticism? Charlie and Dakota will forever be known as Christian and Ana, and that's something I'm sure these actors considered when taking on these roles. Let's give the film and Charlie and Dakota a chance! Feel free to sign the petition if you like -- but just know that it's not going to change a thing.
What do you think of the Fifty Shades of Grey casting petition? Totally agree or overreaction?
