I've always been a fan of Bethenny Frankel since her days on The Real Housewives of New York. She's smart, funny, honest, and seems like a heck of a lot of fun. That's why it pains me to see her embark on her latest venture -- a daytime talk show.
Her new show Bethenny is set to premiere Monday at 11 a.m., which is a big time slot. As excited as I am for her and this major opportunity, however, I fear she's pretty much doomed to fail.
Time after time we see people think they can make a talk show work, and time after time they fail. From Sharon Osbourne to Queen Latifah, Tony Danza to Megan Mullally, they have gone down. And these are people we like, think are funny, and were rooting for as well. Even Kris Jenner, with the pull of photos of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's baby, North West, hasn't been able to make her show work, as it reportedly faces cancellation.
The fact is, it's a tough gig, these daytime talk shows, and personality just isn't enough to go up against the long-standing heavy hitters. To succeed, someone is going to have to come up with something truly unique that blows us away. Based on the teaser, I don't think Bethenny is going to do that. It just looks like more of the same.
I'm pulling for her, really I am, and maybe I'm tainted by my strong desire for her to drop everything and return to The Real Housewives of New York. (Please, Bethenny, please!) It's really where she belongs, and it would pull that show right back up to the level of awesomeness it showed in its early seasons. Plus, can you imagine how great she and Carole Radziwill would be together?
I'm not holding my breath for a RHONY return (she's said before those days are over), and I do wish her all the success in the world. But if it doesn't work out, she should really think about giving Andy Cohen a call.
Will you watch Bethenny's talk show? Do you think it will succeed or fail?
