I never thought I'd find myself defending Kim Kardashian to the world, but here goes. You guys are all wrong about Kim K's photos in CR Fashion Book. In case you haven't heard the Internet collectively groan, "EW WEIRD," this is a cover and spread Kim did for former Paris Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld's new magazine. The photographer was none other than Chanel king Karl Lagerfeld, and yeah, they're a far cry from how we're used to seeing Kim. Think gold grills, diamond face mask, smeared lipstick. Of course Kanye West is rumored to be the guy who pulled the strings to make it happen. But you know what? I love it. All of it.
For one thing, Kim is hugely pregnant in all of the photos. But unlike all the paparazzi photos taken during her pregnancy, which always seemed to show her looking like a trapped animal in pain, these photos make Kim look large and in charge, in a great way. She glows, and she stares back at us with confidence. Okay, maybe she's staring back through a black veil under a baseball cap (in one photo). But at least she looks like she's having fun.
Another photo shows her in all black except for her bare belly and hot pink gloves. Come on! That's fierce. I don't quite get all of it, but it's like a practical joke both on fancy-pants fashion people and on Kardashian fans -- it's the last thing either group expected. And that's kind of the point. Surprise! Editor Roitfeld (who is definitely weird in many ways but is also an irreproachable style goddess) says the spread is a tribute to the issue's theme of hope: "Pregnancy is something that I always love. It’s about hope and the future and a new baby." But hope doesn't always have to come in safe, soft pastels. Hope is kind of daring, it's dangerous. It's even ... absurd. I think these photos say that.
