Naomi Watts is playing the Princess in the upcoming biopic Diana -- a role she actually turned down the twice before fully committing. And the reason she was so worried about the role was because of Diana's sons Prince William and Prince Harry.
Watts, like Diana, is a mom of two sons and she didn't want cause any pain for the Princes, but when she turned the role down, it continued to haunt her.
Watts, seen here in costume for the movie, seems like a perfect Diana. Aside from their physical similarities, both women have such an inherent femininity. I understand her concern with taking on the role. She told the U.K.'s Sunday Times:
The biggest reason that made me pause was how the princes were going to be feel about this. There was actually quite an eerie moment in London when I did see Prince William in a restaurant, and I got very nervous, because if I caught his eye I didn't want to interpret a look and think he had a negative feeling about this idea, so I made sure not to look.
I turned it down twice. I was a little bit torn but once I'd said no, I wasn't completely at peace. Sometimes when you say no, you feel free, but it just wasn't the case. There was something very intriguing about this woman's life. It was extraordinary.
Naomi also spoke about how fame -- whether from being an actor or a Princess -- can be a very dark thing, and it often ends up being something you have to try to survive. When it came to Diana's life, and her level of fame, there certainly was that darkness. And the story of Diana's life was going to be told in a film with Watts or not, so she ultimately decided to take it with the Princes in mind.
I do care deeply about how the princes feel, of course. I am a mum of two boys. But it was a story that was bound to be told at some point, and it's possibly fresher than people expected.
Naomi and husband Liev Schreiber have two sons much younger than the Princes. Sasha is 6 and Samuel is 4. But I love how she's concerned about their feelings. I'm wondering if the Princes approve of Naomi playing their mother.
What do you think of Naomi as Diana? Do you think she should seek the Princes' approval or worry about their feelings?
