Huh? That's what a lot of people are saying after Warner Bros. announced today that Ben Affleck will star as Batman in the next Man of Steel sequel directed by Zack Snyder.
Sure Affleck has played a superhero before (though arguably not that well) in Daredevil, but he's not who we were expecting at all. We were thinking/hoping to see Ryan Gosling or Joe Manganiello put on the cape. Other names thrown around included Josh Brolin, Richard Armitage (The Hobbit), Matthew Goode (The Watchman), Orlando Bloom, and Max Martini (Pacific Rim), but never did I hear anyone mention Ben Affleck.
It's nothing against Ben. I think he's a fantastic director and good actor, and he is one of the real-life good guys in Hollywood. But as Batman? I'm just not seeing it. I mean if we're going to watch a guy run around in tights, should it not be someone smokin' hot? Ben is cute and all, but ... he's not Ryan Gosling.
Snyder strongly believes in him though to play opposite Henry Cavill, who will play Clark Kent and Superman again. In a statement, Snyder said:
Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry’s Superman. He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne. I can’t wait to work with him.
The good news is the movie isn't scheduled for release until July 2015 so we still have some time to get used to the idea. Maybe it will grow on us?
Do you think Ben Affleck will make a good Batman?
