Ladies, I have sad news. You will not ever date Prison Break hottie Wentworth Miller. Unless you're a man. Because he's gay. Wentworth Miller came out as a gay man in a brave letter to Petersburg International Film Festival director Maria Averbakh, who had invited him to attend the event. In the letter, which has been posted to GLAAD's website, Miller stated that he couldn't, in good conscience, attend the festival due to the fact Russian President Vladimir Putin recently signed off on a law that is shockingly anti-gay. The law bans the "propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations" and will fine people who provide information about the gay community to minors or hold gay pride rallies. Miller's letter graciously thanked Averbakh for her invitation, but stated: "As a gay man … I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government."
I can't imagine this decision was an easy one for Miller, who wasn't "out" in the public eye. But it's incredibly admirable that this is the manner in which he chose to tell the public he's gay. Not only is he taking a stand for something he believes in, he's bringing awareness to something that seems outdated, cruel, and extremely sad.
Miller could have easily declined Averbakh's invitation with no explanation whatsoever, but instead he honorably did what was "right". I'm sure many gay men and women in Russian are thankful for his bravery right now. While many American women are heartbroken.
What do you think of this?
