Amanda Bynes' Parents Granted Conservatorship Over Their Mentally Ill Daughter

Amanda Bynes blue wig, Amanda Bynes conservatorshipAmanda Bynes' parents have been granted temporary conservatorship over their troubled daughter and doctors got approved an emergency 30-day extension of Bynes' confinement in a psychiatric hospital, according to TMZ.

The doctors fought to have her stay prolonged because she is "gravely disabled as the result of a mental disorder." They said she was not well enough to attend the conservatorship hearing, and a judge agreed.

Bynes' parents won their fight Friday to control their daughter's medical treatment, finances, and other affairs for at least the next month. A judge will then re-evaluate the situation and determine whether or not to make it permanent. Richard and Lynn Bynes believe the former child actress suffers from schizophrenia and drug addiction.

Bynes, 27, has been in a very public and haunting downward spiral of disturbing behavior for months. The final straw came a few weeks ago when she set a stranger's lawn on fire after dousing it and her dog with gasoline. Her mom and dad intervened and put her in a mental hospital against her will, saying she posed a threat to herself and others.

Bynes has opposed both her confinement and the conservatorship, and the judge ordered her parents not to make any decisions without consulting her lawyer.

Her $4 million in savings has dwindled rapidly in recent months but it's not clear how she's spent all of it.

The star has reportedly been taking drugs for schizophrenia since she's been hospitalized, but doctors say she has a long uphill battle before she'll be well again.

Bynes has made headlines for several drunk driving arrests and a series of incidents involving bizarre, erratic behavior, including an apparent addiction to marijuana, alcohol, and plastic surgery. She's also said she has an eating disorder. She's taken to Twitter and other social media sites to insult a slew of celebrities and post photos of herself, some of them showing off her numerous cosmetic treatments and others taken in her underwear.

Bynes' situation is reminiscent of the struggles pop star Britney Spears went through. Spears' parents were also ultimately granted conservatorship over the singer until she was mentally stable enough to take care of herself again.

Let's hope this latest news means Bynes continues to get the care she needs to make a full recovery.

Do you think granting Bynes' parents conservatorship was the right decision?

Can drug use cause schizophrenia? Or make it worse? You often hear about them together. I know not all drug users are schizophrenic and not all schizophrenics are drug users so I'm curious.

Me^: A friend of mine had a schizophrenic mother, putting my friend at risk of someday developing the illness. However, a few years ago he began using drugs extensively, and is now living in a group home (since 2011) being treated for schizophrenia. In his situation, the doctors believe that the drug use caused the schizophrenia to manifest. Because his mother was schizophrenic it's likely that he would have developed the illness at some point in his life anyway. However, had he not destroyed the healthy part of his brain with drugs he could have lived a normal life far longer. That's really all I know about the link between schizophrenia and drug use. I would imagine that since drugs will alter anyone's state of mind, mentally ill or not, that they would probably make schizophrenia worse. Just a guess though.

Some use drugs to get rid of the "voices" or "images". Some people with mental illness self medicate with drugs, which Amanda might be doing.

I just recently joined twitter again and noticed that I followed Amanda. I looked on her page and the twitter posts one after another just shows the spiral downward.

I am glad that she set fire to the driveway an that no one was hurt. I believe that this was the best way for her parents and courts to intervene. Because if she didn't and no one would of been able to help her.

Hope she gets the help she needs and that she can live a normal productive life.

Schizophrenia is caused by a gene mutation, you cannot "get" it form using drugs, but yes, it can make symptoms better or worse and, like Bills said, many mentally ill people find relief from symptoms by taking drugs, so they are often seen together. However, if you do not have the gene for schizophrenia, no amount of drug use will give it to you.

I hope this girl recovers quickly! Unlike some of the Hollywood starlets who go through this, Amanda is truly talented as an actress and comedienne! She needs to get it together, get healthy, and get back to work doing what she does best. I'm rooting for her! I always loved her on "All That" and "The Amanda Show." Not to mention "Easy A"!

Yes! If she sat the yard and the dog on fire there's no telling what she might do! Her parents loved her enough to step in before she hurt herself or someone else.

Why is it that we are "coddling" Amanda Bynes who is mentally ill, but when someone who isn't famous is mentally ill and kills people as part of their mental illness, people want that person dead? Amanda is slowly killing herself and everyone wants to take care of her. But they want other mentally ill people to die. It's just not right.

But this is good for her parents to take over again. Sometimes you've got to step up and take care of your adult children again.
