Hey, Sons of Anarchy fans, did you realize the season 6 premiere is just a little over a month away? The first episode airs on September 10th, and FX just released a brand-new promo clip that makes this season look deeply ominous, violent, and jam-packed with infighting and betrayal.
In other words, exactly what we've come to expect from this awesome show. But get this, the premiere episode is reportedly so upsetting, creator Kurt Sutter has begged critics to stay quiet about a certain shocking sequence to avoid the accusation that he included it for publicity reasons.
Curious as to what this could possibly be? ME TOO. (Warning: one spoiler for season 6 ahead, and plenty of spoilers for season 5.)
Last we saw the SoA gang, Jax's wife Tara had been taken to jail, right after she had Jax that she was moving to Oregon with the kids with or without him. Jax forcibly shot Wendy up with heroin to keep her from trying to get custody of Abel. Jax and Tig killed Damon Pope, and framed Clay for the murder with the help of Juice and Gemma. Bobby had left his VP patch on the table, unable to deal with Jax's actions. Nero … well, I can't remember what Nero was doing, other than looking SMOKING HOT IN EVERY SCENE, DAMN.
So we know that season 6 will be focused on Jax's problems with SAMCRO and his family, but apparently the first episode will depict a school shooting carried out by a young boy. Sutter recently explained why he chose to include such a sequence:
I’ve wanted to do that story for about three years. I knew obviously it would be somewhat controversial but I feel like as much as I wouldn’t do something just because it was controversial, I’m also not not going to do something because it’s controversial. (…) I feel like it’ll continue to play out and that’s the truth. I will also say that there’s a lot of blood and guts in my show and it’s the signature of the show, but I also feel like — and I feel like I’m not lying to myself when I say this — is that nothing is done gratuitously. The events that happen in the premiere are really the catalyst for the third act of [the series].”
While he defends his decision to feature the scene, Sutter admits he's worried that it will get out before the premiere date:
I feel like if it gets leaked, it’s going to be like, ‘oh, they’re doing it to be controversial to bring more eyes to the episode. Honestly, I’m worried more about that kind of blowback than people finding out about that event.
Hmmmm. Is he really worried that it will leak and stir up controversy, or is he courting controversy ahead of time by seeding critics and publicly talking about the scene? This television promotion stuff is like the freaking Matrix.
At any rate, a Daily Beast contributor who's seen the premiere episode confirms that it may be very difficult to watch:
Even by Sons Of Anarchy standards, [this] isn't going to sit well with a lot of people.
The rest of the season doesn't exactly look like a cakewalk, either. Here's the promo released last month titled "Brawl":
And here's the most recent promo, titled "Mayhem," which includes some intriguing -- and incredibly ominous -- images:
What do you think of the promos for Sons of Anarchy's sixth season? Are you glad to have heads up about the school shooting in the first episode?
