‘Game of Thrones’ Season 4 Casts Its Mace Tyrell But It’s Not Who We Thought

Roger Ashton-GriffithsMore casting news for Game of Thrones season 4! And no more complaining about how there are too many characters on this show after what happened during season 3, mmmk? We'll just get right to it: Roger Ashton-Griffiths has been cast as Mace Tyrell!

So much for the speculation that Sherlock star Mark Gatiss was going to play Mace. What could Gatiss's role possibly be? Anyone got any more theories?

Anyway, Roger should look a little familiar to you. He's been in acting for over 30 years, showing up in A Knight's Tale (which the late King Robert was in!) as well as The Tudors (which Margaery Tyrell, his TV daughter, was in!).

Can we predict, based on A Storm of Swords, what may happen to the Lord of Highgarden, Defender of the Marches? Let's try! Book spoilers ahead!

So obviously Mace is Loras's and Margaery's father. He was once very handsome and powerful, but now he's gotten fat. (As Tyrion quipped, "He has a prodigious appetite, this one.") He's also prematurely old and doesn't seem to know much about politics.

In A Clash of Kings, he actually joined up with Tywin Lannister's forces during the Battle of the Blackwater. He's given some lands and named Master of Ships on the small council as a reward.

In A Storm of Swords, he is actually one of the three judges during Tyrion Lannister's trial after King Joffrey's wine was poisoned at his own wedding. Tyrion is accused of murder. Mace wants to see Tyrion executed for his "crime" because Margaery was drinking out of the same cup as Joffrey. Mace obviously had no idea that it was his own mother, Lady Olenna, who actually did the deadly deed.

Anyway, to be frank, Roger isn't at all what I expected for Mace Tyrell. I thought they'd cast someone, well, a tad more regal-looking, a man who just needed a bit of a makeover to appear authoritative and handsome (I mean, the character did produce some gorgeous children, after all). Don't really get this vibe from Roger in the slightest, but as we all know, HBO knows how to cast this show on an almost perfect level. I'm sure Roger will not disappoint.

So, on top of all of this, we still have to ask: What role is Mark Gatiss playing?!

What do you think of Roger Ashton-Griffiths as Mace Tyrell?
