Exciting news, Game of Thrones fans! Season 4 is shaping up, and a brand new casting announcement has been made. Of course, HBO really has done no wrong when it comes to picking people to star on this show. They're all so insanely talented, so insanely amazing, so insanely beautiful. And the latest certainly doesn't disappoint.
The actress Indira Varma has been cast to play Ellaria Sand on the show. She's been in Rome and Bride & Prejudice. And she'll be paired with another new face in season 4, Prince Oberyn Martell, aka the Red Viper, who will be played by Pedro Pascal.
Obeyrn Martell has a huge part in the second half of A Storm of Swords, especially when it comes to what happens to Tyrion Lannister. So what can we expect to see from this newly casted pair? Well, there are book spoilers ahead, so prepare yourself!
Ellaria Sand is the unmarried lover of Prince Oberyn Martell. She's a bastard daughter and was described by the prince as very sexually adventurous and could perhaps be bisexual (hey, perfect for this series!). She's described as having a more exotic look and has black hair, so Indira is perfect, as she is half-Indian.
In case you're wondering, "Sand" is the bastard name for Dorne because of its desert climate, just as "Snow" is the bastard name in the North (Jon Snow!) ... as there is lots of, well, snow up north.
Anyway Ellaria goes with Oberyn to King's Landing. He says he wants to take a seat on the small council, but he secretly wants to avenge his sister's and her children's deaths at the hands of the Mountain. She also makes an appearance at King Joffrey's wedding as well as Tyrion's trial by combat (Tyrion is accused of Joffrey's murder). Sadly, when Oberyn faces the Mountain as Tyrion's champion, he ends up being brutally killed.
That's all we see of her in A Storm of Swords. In A Feast for Crows, after Oberyn's death, his lover in mourning takes his remains back to Dorne. She and her daughters are hidden by Prince Doran to protect them. We'll have to wait and see if any of this will make it into season 4.
In all, it most likely will be a heartbreaking season for Ellaria (shocking, right, does anyone end up happy in Game of Thrones?). She'll be present for some of the most important moments in season 4, and we'll only have to wait and see if they'll be able to expand upon her character more than they do in the book. And is it safe to say we may see an, um, "adventurous" sex scene or two between her and Pascal? Oh, Game of Thrones, how I miss you!
