We have a sad update to the story of 31-year-old Cory Monteith's unexpected death. The Vancouver, Canada police have announced that according to the British Columbia Coroners Service, Cory Monteith died of "mixed drug toxicity, involving heroin and alcohol." It's what we'd feared -- and what we'd suspected. Cory lost his battle against substance abuse. In a statement, the coroner's office said, "There is no evidence to suggest Mr. Monteith's death was anything other than a most tragic accident."
I'm horribly sorry to hear this was Monteith's cause of death. I was hoping it could have been something else, a freak aneurysm, anything. I wanted to believe rehab earlier this year had worked for him, that Lea Michele's love could sustain him. In the end, neither was enough. I don't know what anyone else could have possibly done to prevent this death.
We still know very little at this point -- what triggered his relapse, how he got the drugs and alcohol, and who was enabling him. Police believe he was alone at the time, which is utterly heartbreaking. We do know that as a seasoned addict (his history with substance abuse goes way back, to his early teens), he knew how to hide it well.

An ex-girlfriend, Mallory Matoush, says, "Cory kept me in the dark about his drug use." She says he just seemed like a "happy guy" to her. He'd told her about his earlier struggles, but he never did drugs in front of her, and she saw him drink only moderately. She was shocked to hear about his death. "He had so much more to do. He would have done so many good things with his life."
According to TMZ, Cory was living a double life. While in Los Angeles he showed up for work sober, every single time. But when he returned home to Vancouver, his friends would weaken his resolve. His family, Lea, and sober supportive friends were aware of and deeply concerned about these relapses in Canada.
How do you feel knowing that it's been confirmed that drugs and alcohol caused Cory Monteith's death?
