Jim Carrey's Apology to Gun Owners Sounds as Lame as His Stance Against Movie Violence

Eye Roll 17

Jim CarreyThere are plenty of celebrities who consistently express points of view I don't particularly agree with, and yet they manage to do so without making me fantasize about catching them in a deserted high school locker room so I can painfully snap them on the ass with a twisted-up towel. Jim Carrey, however, has rapidly devolved from Slightly Obnoxious but Entertaining Comedian to Opinionated Windbag Who's Even More Grating Than Gisele Bündchen and Gwyneth Paltrow Combined.

It's obvious that Jim Carrey has some very strong feelings about gun control, based on some of the statements he's been sharing via Twitter. He has every right to speak out about his beliefs, of course -- but his bizarre decision to decry his own role in Kick-Ass 2 combined with yesterday's faux-apology to the so-called 'assault rifle fans' he bashed so furiously a few months ago makes me entirely uninterested in anything else he has to say on the subject.

Here's what Carrey tweeted on Sunday:

If it's not entirely clear what he's referring to, I'm guessing it's some of these tweets he's shared in the past:

My love to the victims in Colorado. The kid ws sick bt u who can still support automatic weapon sales r the real maniacs in this country.

Any1 who would run out to buy an assault rifle after the Newtown massacre has very little left in their body or soul worth protecting. ;^\

'Cold Dead Hand' is abt u heartless motherf%ckers unwilling 2 bend 4 the safety of our kids.Sorry if you're offended by the word safety! ;^}

I don't object to his advocacy, but to me Carrey loses any respect he was hoping to command by insulting gun enthusiasts like my responsible, law-abiding husband, who owns assault weapons (assuming we're on the same page on how such a gun is defined -- part of the problem with referring to them as such is that it's a nebulous term with different meanings and purposes depending on who's using it) and yet somehow, DEFYING ALL THE ODDS, is neither a maniac nor a heartless motherfucker.

Honestly, that half-assed apology just comes across as insincere, even with the weird little emoticons that I guess is supposed to be Carrey's alternately sad -- then happy? -- face. I get that Jim Carrey has these newly passionate personal convictions, but he sounds almost unhinged lately. Witness the tweets he posted last month, in which he essentially retracted his own participation in the yet-unreleased Kick-Ass 2:

Even Mark Millar, creator of Kick-Ass, was perplexed by Carrey's last-minute change of heart:

(...) I respect both his politics and his opinion. But I'm baffled by this sudden announcement as nothing seen in this picture wasn't in the screenplay 18 months ago.

If Jim Carrey is truly hoping to sway the public's opinion on gun control via his own moralistic stances, I'm thinking he needs to dial way back on the rhetoric, insults, and grammatically FUBAR'd tweets. And if he wants to continue to work in Hollywood, he should probably apologize for publicly seeking OUT the movie, committing to the role, cashing his enormous paycheck -- then turning around and throwing the film under a bus.

What do you think of Jim Carrey's recent sentiments?

Too late for an apology, the damage is done. You alienated your fanbase, Jim -- http://placeitonluckydan.com/2013/06/career-advice-jim-carrey/.

No one takes Jim Carey seriously, he's freaking crazy. Matt Damon is an outspoken gun control advocate who makes millions of dollars off of gun violence in his movies. Same with Mark Wahlberg.
But there are also Pro-Second Amendment celebrities: Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, James Earl Jones, Bruce Willis, the Dalai Lama, Chuck Norris, Christian Slater, Johnny Depp, Tom Selleck, and Charlie Daniels.

Don't be too mad at Jim - he just realized he's not relevant anymore.

Linda, just because your husbands gun is Scary" doesn't make it an assault weapon. You would never know what an assault weapon is, because you think all guns are assault weapons. Another thing, Jim Carey sounds like all of you gun control windbags. He said no different than you or the other stir writers.

I dont think billsfan actually read the post.

Actually I think he's awesome and he's right. People care more about their "rights" than they do about the safety of our children. It's disgusting.
