johnny depp vanessa paradisJohnny Depp's split from Vanessa Paradis, his partner of 14 years and baby mama, caught us all off-guard. Sure, breakups in Hollywood are a dime a dozen. And maybe we were just fooled by the fact that they had such an eccentric, unconventional-seeming situation -- the fact that they never married and lived in France, etc. -- but it seemed like Johnny and Vanessa would be able to make it work! Or at least we hoped it would for their kids' sake.

Johnny's been pretty tight-lipped about the split for the most part, but speaking with Charlie Rose on CBS This Morning yesterday, he chose to open up a bit on something he says really helped them get through it: the truth.

Johnny explained:

When you have children, there is no room for lies, no room for anything but the truth. Anything other than that is a bad example, I believe. We were just very truthful with them and they were just incredibly understanding, incredibly accepting. I was extremely proud of them, the way they dealt with it.

Aww. Surely, it wasn't easy at all for 14-year-old Lily-Rose and 11-year-old Jack, but I definitely believe that leveling with them was probably the best thing Johnny and Vanessa could have done. I agree that anything other than being honest probably does set a bad example. Not to mention that it's just not healthy for anyone affected by a breakup.

We lie to ourselves all the time about why a relationship doesn't work out. Sometimes the lies are easier to cope with than the truth. But you're never going to learn from lies or be able to move on as easily if you're not facing reality. Plus, being forthcoming with one another definitely lays the foundation for open lines of communication post-split. Which is especially important when you're still co-parenting!

All in all, it seems like the breakup was actually quite amicable. And to know that Johnny and Vanessa were amicable while remaining genuine and real about it all is even cooler.

Do you agree with Johnny and Vanessa's post-split strategy?
