'Teen Mom' Maci Bookout Stands Up Against Hate & Gets Major Backlash

Maci BookoutTeen Mom Maci Bookout probably knows a thing or two about hatred and prejudice. She posted a quote to her Instagram page yesterday about how being gay isn't a choice and oh WOW did Maci's comment ignite a gay marriage debate.

The feisty redhead, not one to back down, suggested everyone who was so up in arms get themselves a beer (or five). The reality is, Maci has every right to speak out about something she believes in. Lucky for her, she is also on the right side of history and won't have to do any embarrassing backtracking later when bigotry against gays becomes the extreme minority.

Typically when stars, especially reality stars, become political, it's annoying. Most of the time, we don't care what reality "stars" think about anything. After all, what qualifications do they have besides lives that are train-wreck-like enough to get them on TV?

But Maci is right. She is expressing her opinion, and like it or not, she reaches a lot of people. I say more power to her. More power to Kailyn and Catelynn, both of whom are ALSO part of the No H8 campaign and have been open in their support of gay rights.

It's not really that complicated to support love over hate. It's not that hard to understand why someone might and why they would support equality and marriage rights for all.

It would be far MORE controversial if Maci was against gay marriage, especially given her less than conventional life. I applaud her intelligence and willingness to recognize her ability to make people listen and to use it in the right way.

It's not always easy to be courageous, but Maci is and when she is attacked, she takes it in stride. Good on her for knowing which comments can and should just be laughed off. Stupid people say stupid things. It says more about them than it does about her. And as someone who writes for the Internet, I know this, too.

Go Maci!

Do you think she shouldn't get political?

Maybe people are just responding to a b-list fifteen minutes of famer trying to get some pub by latching on to the headline of the day

I think it's great! Today more people believe in love equality than do not. And we all need to be vocal about it! What happens if you are anti-gay and your child turns out to be gay? How embarassing that you made so many ignorant comments before! And she is right, you are born gay.

I wouldn't call it 'getting political' myself.  Yes, it was spawned by the results of the rulings yesterday, however, voicing your opinion on gay marriage (be it one way or the other) is our right under the First Amendment.  Not everyone's going to agree with one side or the other and that's just the way it goes.  I know how I feel and I voice it freely where it's warranted.  I won't in here to spare the forum though. :)

You're exactly right.  Bigotry against gays will become the extreme minority and everyone who is trying to deny them basic human rights will get to feel bad about being on the "wrong" side of this story when the years go by.  Trying to deny others the right to have a legal family is discrimination, it's as simple as that.

Sarah: jealous much?

MamaMel: People arent "born" gay. It's this screwed up society that now allows people to think that being gay is okay, and it's not.

Sandra: then marry someone of the opposite gender if u want a legal family. Not someone pretending to be of the opposite gender.

If you want a legal family, marry the opposite gender. Even though you "gays" are starting to get some people on your side, there was obviously an opposition in congress to get your "rights" which yall dont even deserve. Not everyone deserves rights and priviledges. There's no such thing as being born gay. God did not make gays, society (mortal mind) has created gays so once again, gay is unnatural and doesnt deserve the rights that normal people do.

--emi... --emilyy--

Wooh! At least us Emily's are smart! Lmao

Olivia Sumner

Really emily? The rights that "normal people" do? I am a Christian and I am ashamed to read this. I dont know if you have read the new testament... like at all... but its about loving people. No matter what. You dont have to agree with their actions, but you are called to love them anyway. To not judge them, but to show them the same love you would show someone who thinks just like you. Its this narrowmindedness that is causing growing hate for religion, namely Christianity.

I wonder if Maci would have received the same applause had she stood up for Jesus. Probably not.

I think she is in the right..... she is standing up for people who may not have that much of a voice! All you pathetic tabloid people need to move on with your lives and leave these young moms alone!!!
