Taylor-Johnson with husband Aaron at Skyfall premiereYesterday, Fifty Shades of Grey fan nation breathed a collective sigh of relief upon learning that Universal Pictures and Focus Features has fiiiinally found their director. Sam Taylor-Johnson was never on any of the short lists of contenders we heard about, and she's certainly not a household name like some of the candidates being thrown around. But she does have plenty of other attributes going for her, and what's more, her hiring is a sign we have lots to look forward to.
Here, what we can deduce about Fifty Shades of Grey movie casting now that Taylor-Johnson is on board ...
- Casting announcements are a'comin'! Now that Taylor-Johnson is on board, one of her first orders of business will be to sit down and pick that Christian and Ana we've been speculating on for EONS now. Thus, the wait for word on official casting can't be far off. Hooray!
- Forget Ian Somerhalder, Matt Bomer, Henry Cavill, even Ryan Gosling. Could it be that our eventual Christian Grey is right "at home" with the movie's director? 46-year-old Taylor-Johnson's 23-year-old husband, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, is a young, sexy British actor who happens to look like Johnny Depp or James Franco and has already wracked up credits in flicks like Anna Karenina, Savages, and Kick-Ass. Unless the studios are going to take issue with nepotism, it's quite possible that the guy could have a real crack (heh, heh) at playing Christian! (And from the looks of him, I'm not sure fans would mind ...)
- Speaking of casting, I would bet there's a big chance complete unknowns could nab the lead roles. After all, Sam Taylor-Johnson herself is borderline unknown and may want to give newbies the same HUGE break she's been given. Otherwise, we could get one or two A-listers, because as Ang Lee recently told Details, Hollywood's preference is for maximum recognizability or none at all. "Totally fresh face or a big movie star. That's the industry rule."
- We can likely rest assured that our on-screen Christian and Ana will have chemistry, be charismatic, and a perfect fit, if only because Taylor-Johnson seems committed to delivering what fans want (she vowed to "honor the power of Erika’s book and the characters of Christian and Anastasia"), and she's obviously bringing a strong female perspective to the fold. Awesome.
