I can't imagine that there are many acting roles more intimidating than the job of portraying one of the most recognizable women the world has ever known, particularly when said woman would have only been 52 this year had she lived. It's no wonder Naomi Watts says she nearly turned down the starring role in the upcoming Diana biopic, and now she's facing the next big gauntlet in terms of public reaction to her performance as the late Diana, Princess Of Wales, because the first official teaser trailer has hit the web.
I almost didn't want to watch the clip, I was so worried about whether or not Watts was right for the role. But it's a hell of a trailer -- and it cleverly bypasses some of the resistance to seeing a famous Hollywood actress playing such an iconic figure.
Here's why the trailer is so smart:
• It's only a minute long. Just enough to whet our appetite without falling into the all-too-common trap of giving everything away.
• It's dramatic. We don't even see Naomi's face until halfway through when she seemingly transforms into the gold-gowned princess before our very eyes.
• It sidesteps any criticism of her voice. Will she sound like Diana? Nobody knows yet, because there's not a lick of dialogue in the clip. Brilliant.

Looks pretty decent so far, don't you think? While I'm not sure I'd agree with some of the early reception praising Watts for being "the spitting image of Diana" -- her hair, sure, but I'm not seeing a major resemblance -- she's a solid actress and it'll be really interesting to see how she handles the accent and mannerisms.
The films is focused on the last two years of Diana’s life, when she was working as a philanthropist, romantically involved with Dr. Hasnat Khan (Naveen Andrews), and being constantly hounded by the papparazzi. It's set to premiere in the U.K. on Sept. 5, and will hit American theaters sometime after that.
So, what did you think of this early look at Diana? Do you think Naomi Watts was the right choice?
