Remember high school senior Jake Davidson who made headlines for his YouTube prom invitation aimed at Kate Upton? Upton had a great attitude about the whole thing, tweeting "You can call me Katie if you want! How could I turn down that video! I’ll check my schedule (wink)." Unfortunately for Davidson, despite Upton's professed inability to turn down the charming prom-posal video that's racked up more than 2.7 million views, she did in fact discover that her schedule was busy that night. Wink.
Once Upton's "maybe" morphed into a definitive "yeah, no," I thought that would be the end of Jake Davidson's prom-related 15 minutes of fame. Like, nice try kid, you definitely went swinging for the fences there, but even viral stars don't always get the girl. As it turns out, Davidson ended up bringing a supermodel to the big dance after all -- and as runner-ups go, this one wasn't half bad.
If you missed the original prom-posal, the story is that in March, Davidson posted a YouTube video called "Kate Upton, Will You Go To Prom With Me?" It started racking up views right away, probably thanks to Davidson's ambitious, self-deprecating humor. As he says in the clip,
I’m Jewish, 5’9” on a really good day – and I can’t dance. At all. You’re Christian, 5’10”, and that Cat Daddy video should have won an Oscar for best short film. You could say this is destiny.
Check it out:
Upton at least pretended to give the invitation some serious consideration, but ultimately conveyed her regrets. At that point, I'm pretty sure Davidson's newfound fame would have made it fairly easy to find SOMEONE at his school willing to be his prom date, but the enterprising folks at Inside Edition had another plan: they set him up with 21-year-old Danish supermodel and fellow Sports Illustrated swimsuit hottie Nina Agdal.
Naturally, there's video of their evening, which I would describe as "cute, if also possibly one of the most awkward things I've ever witnessed":
Well, Agdal certainly seems to be a good sport, doesn't she? Although she did call it a night after one hour. Not that her early departure deterred Davidson:
I had a great prom. It was shorter than I expected, but it was still an awesome day. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I kind of jokingly invited her to lunch, and I'm still waiting for that.
Oh, Jake Davidson, I'm glad you got to stroll into your prom with a supermodel towering over you and all, but maybe now it's time to move on to real girls? Who want to be your date because they actually want to be your date? Just a thought. But congratulations on your Sports Illustrated dating success, even if you did encourage ten billion more celebrity YouTube invitations in the process.
What do you think of Jake Davidson's prom story? Do you think it's adorable, or a little weird?
