Zach Galifianakis Saves Homeless Laundry Lady He Knew 20 Years Ago

Awww! 13

Zach GalifianakisWhen you hear about celebrities doing good deeds, it usually takes the form of showing up at a charity gala or adopting a cute pup. Not that there's anything wrong with that. But you rarely hear about this kind of good deed. One that is so unbelievably altruistic that it made all the difference in the world for one lucky elderly lady. The lady, 87-year-old Elizabeth "Mimi" Haist, happened to make friends with a struggling comedian by the unwieldy name of Zach Galifianakis in Los Angeles 20 years ago. She volunteered at the laundromat where Zach, who lived around the corner, took his dirty clothes. When Zach found out two years ago that Mimi's laundry career didn't work out and she was homeless -- Zach stepped up. In a BIG way.

A lot of people would have given the homeless laundry lady a few bucks -- maybe even written out a big check, if you're a star. But Zach took it to a whole other level.

He rented Mimi a one-bedroom apartment and pays all of the expenses on it. Wow! That's quite a gift. Sure, Zach is rich and famous now and has three Hangover movies under his belt. But an actor never knows where his next job is coming from, and L.A. rent isn't cheap. Once he committed to something like this, he couldn't undo it. I imagine he's got to pick up everything from utilities to grocery bills if she was homeless. But he did it anyway!

If that wasn't enough good will for any human being, Zach takes it a step further by regularly making Mimi his date for movie premieres. He'll be taking her to The Hangover 3.

Another star stepped up to help Mimi too. Zach introduced her to Renee Zellweger, who furnished her apartment. Mimi calls her a "very sweet lady."

As for Zach, he sends a limo to pick her up for premieres. Says Mimi:

If he’s in town, he takes me. Otherwise he lets me take a friend. I dress up nice and a friend helps me with my makeup. It’s fun, not something I’ve ever dreamed I’d experience. The limo takes me home afterwards.

Can I get a big AWWWW? Mimi says that if people ask her if she's Zach's grandmother, she likes to joke that she's his girlfriend. He even takes her to the after-premiere parties, where she says she drinks "lemon drop martinis" and hob nobs with the celebs.

That Zach. What a great guy, eh? Those two sure do make a cute couple!

What do you think of Zach's deed?

That is so unspeakably lovely. I'm so happy for her, what a good deed!

It's so refreshing to see a celebrity doing something in such a personal way. As you said, there's nothing wrong with signing a check or anything, but this feels so much better.

I am about to cry. Now that is a man who does a "good deed" instead of talking about "doing wonderful things for others." Twenty years a go, huh? You never know how you touch someone in their lives, in a good way. "From the bottom of my heart, I Salute Zach G!!!"

Anyone else find zach instantly more attractive after reading this?  A kind heart is more attractive than anything else.
