When you were watching the Billboard Music Awards last night, did you think you heard Justin Bieber being booed during his acceptance speech for the fan-voted Milestone Award? Well, your ears didn't deceive you. That really happened: Amid the uproarious cheers (uproarious cheers he took a good, long pause to take in), Justin Bieber was booed. And he clearly didn't appreciate it.
Clad in mirrored sunglasses and a leather pantsuit-type of getup, Bieber stared out into the crowd for a few moments before saying anything at all. And when he started speaking, it was incredibly obvious that he was not only pissed at the booing (as anyone would be), he was really defensive.
Bieber said: "I'm 19 years old. I think I'm doing a pretty good job. Basically from my heart I really just want to say it really should be about the music. It should be about the craft that I'm making. This is not a gimmick, and I'm an artist, and I should be taken seriously." Host Tracy Morgan came to his defense afterwards, saying: "Don't be booin' nobody, this ain't Showtime at the Apollo."
Now, although I cringed a little bit at Justin being booed (that's just mean!), dude can't be totally shocked at what happened -- and he really can't pull the "I'm just a wittle boy" card either. Some of Justin's behavior lately has been flat-out out of control. Yes, we all know he's talented. But there's more to being an "artist", specifically a pop star artist, than Justin's craft. He's a very public figure. In short, he needs to get his shit together.
I don't foresee The Biebs losing a giant chunk of his fan-base any time soon -- Bielebers are hard-core -- but the booing last night shows that he isn't impervious to such a thing either. Sure, his fans love him for his music and boyish good looks, but they're not stupid: They'll know when it's time to roll up their posters and laser off their "JB" tattoos.
