Remember several weeks back when Vampire Diaries-turned-Arrow star Stephen Amell posted a video mentioning the meeting he took regarding the Fifty Shades of Grey movie? He was the closest thing we had to a lead on a guy poised to play Christian Grey. (Ian Somerhalder was probably stalking the story as it unfolded online and cursing a blue streak.) Then, we heard Alex Pettyfer may have a shot ... at least if potential director Gus Van Sant has anything to say about it. Well, now, it looks like the buzz has come full circle, and we can write Amell off as a contender -- for good.
As it turns out, the actor hadn't even read the book when he took that meeting! (Brilliant, dude.) But he recently got the chance to and posted his take on Facebook ...
Was on a flight yesterday evening back to LA with no movie, so I grabbed 50 Shades of Grey and burned through it. Ummm ... I hope they get the movie made, and I'm sure someone will be excellent in it. That person will not be me.
HA! Well, well, well. I kinda love this guy even more now. Way to be a straight shooter. And way to be completely disinterested in a role that just about any B- onto D-list actor in Hollywood would kill for right now! That's impressive.
More from The Stir: Ian Somerhalder May Be Getting Coached to Play Christian Grey
I wonder what about the book caused him to completely rule out his involvement. Was he turned off by the mercurial nature of the character? Naaah! Is he just afraid that it runs a great risk of being turned into a bad softcore porn barely worthy of being aired on Cinemax at 2 a.m.? A terrible Gigli- or Glitter-level bomb at the box office? Perhaps. Or maybe he just didn't identify with anything about the story. I admire the candor of a professional who can call a spade a spade and know a highly-coveted role like this isn't for them. Thankfully for us and the production, there are many more actors who do seem to think the role was MADE for them (cough Ian).
Also, interestingly, it's pretty much a sure bet that the flick is being made, so why is he even saying he hopes that's in the bag? Amell must have been more in the dark than we realized. That "meeting" may have been nothing more than a casual conversation with E.L. James or one of the producers. At any rate, ladies who've gotten your hopes up for Stephen, have no fear -- there are plenty of Christian wannabes waiting to get their shot at cracking the riding crop!
Are you bummed that Stephen Amell is out of the running? What do you think turned him off?
