He may not be a fan favorite like Ian Somerhalder or Matt Bomer, but Alex Pettyfer is one young, hot, up and coming star. After making the ladies squeal with his performance in last summer's Magic Mike, the 23-year-old hottie's been super buzzworthy. So it's not that surprising that Pettyfer has been cast as Christian Grey. No, not in a fan-made trailer, but in hot shot director Gus Van Sant's test film, which was reportedly made to convince producers he should be brought on to helm the Fifty Shades of Grey movie. Ooooh!
According to The Wrap, Alex and an undisclosed actress shot a scene in which Anastasia Steele loses her virginity to Christian Grey. Sounds like Van Sant figures if you're going to go for it, you might as well GO FOR IT, huh?
What's more, there's evidence -- via James Franco, nonetheless -- that this may have been more than just a "test-run."
Whether he only knows as much as we do or something more, Franco recently told the press:
I heard Gus [Van Sant] might direct [Fifty Shades of Grey]. If he directed it, I'd do it. It sounds interesting.
Oh geeze. The only role I can see Franco in is of Christian's therapist. And even then, the guy's supposed to be British, so pass. But Alex Pettyfer as Christian? YES, please! Not only would starring in the test film prepare him (he's already been in Christian's "head space" now so to speak), but he's getting additional practice as we speak, as he's currently in Atlanta shooting a remake of the 1981 sexy drama Endless Love.

'Course "insiders" and Universal are making a big fuss about how the test film has no bearing on who has been cast. Universal spokesperson said that the studio isn't out to directors or actors, nor have they commissioned any test reels. Nonetheless, if Van Sant is close to getting on board or has a really good shot at getting on board, and he digs Alex as his Christian, there's a strong chance he'll land the part. And if that was the case, who would we be to complain?!
Could you see Alex Pettyfer as Christian Grey? How about Gus Van Sant as the director?
