Why Jennifer Lawrence Made 'Time 100' List & Kristen Stewart Didn't

jennifer lawrenceEvery year, Time magazine makes a list of the 100 most influential people who have changed, for better or for worse, our world over the last 12 months. One of the honorees this go round is actress Jennifer Lawrence, or as you and your kids might know her, the Girl on Fire, Katniss Everdeen.

If we compare Jennifer Lawrence to her contemporaries, as I'm sure Time did, it's clear why this exceptional young woman was selected for the list, and why, say, Kristen Stewart was not.

At 22 and 23 respectively, Jennifer Lawrence and Kristen Stewart have more in common than just their age. They both started out acting when they were tweens. They both became famous in their late teens, and they both star in massive franchises based on young adult novels.

So what is it that makes Jennifer Lawrence so much more influential than KStew? Well, for one thing, Jen's taken some early risks in her career that ended up paying off. Winter's Bone earned her an Oscar nomination at the ripe old age of 19. It's not to say that Kristen hasn't given it a shot -- her roles in Into the Wild and The Runaways were edgy -- it's just that she wasn't the star, the lead, as Jennifer was.

That, and Twilight, as much money as it's earned, is no Hunger Games. After a certain age, an age I myself have long passed, it's impossible to care about a teenage vampire love story.

But a dystopian revolution fit with kids killing kids? Yes, please. It's a subject matter that appeals to all age groups, as far as I'm concerned.

Beyond Jennifer's better career path, she's also managed to stay under the radar while, at the same time, is everywhere. We don't care about who she's dating, but we do care about what she's wearing. We don't care if she's bought a new apartment, but if she's got a new project, we're eager to hear more.

If Kristen Stewart so much as cuts her nails, she gets press. The circus that surrounds her relationship with Robert Pattinson is certainly not all their fault, but they do share part ownership of the dog and pony show. Once you release a statement to People magazine apologizing to your boyfriend for cheating, you've sort of knocked down that wall you worked so hard to build by going in separate entrances.

And as trite as it sounds, Jennifer projects an image of happiness. She smiles a lot. She has an easy laugh. She talks about farting in Vanity Fair and she laments the fact that she has to wear Spanx. Kristen, on the other hand, looks like she hates life.

Jennifer's influence is farther, wider, and more positive, at this moment in time, than Kristen's, or any other actress in her age bracket who has major movie experience. In fact, Jen's just getting started.

Riding high off that Oscar win for Silver Linings Playbook and now this Time honor, I'm looking forward to her next move.

I am not, however, wondering whose hand she's holding at Coachella.

What are your thoughts on Jennifer Lawrence?

I think J Law is a very clever and witty gal.  Everytime I see her interviewing, she is confident, composed and funny! There is a very likable and relatable quality about her

I think she deserves it because this girl can act. She's also down to earth, funny and awkward lol

I think the comparisons need to stop between Jennifer and Kristen. Both are talented young woman. Kristen has millions of teens that adore her.People like her because she is not fake. She seems like the person next door, except more famous.I assure you Kristen has had great influence, or no one would give a dam about what she does,or who she dates. The very reason your comparing Jennifer to Kristen answers that question. Any article with Kristen name on it gets you lots of hits to your blog. People use Kristen all the time to gain more rating or hits, because they know she has millions and millions of fans around the world who care about her.

I completely agree with this article ... just as an observer jennifer comes off as cheery and lovable, in her interviews and speeches. she is also never in the news for the wrong reasons. on the other hand, when kristen speaks she comes off as awkward and slightly angry, and tends to make the audience uncomfortable even when she is trying to say a joke. Acting-wise, well we all know who won that battle.

I agree with Chris 100%. You can have your opinion of Kristen but you cannot speak for anyone else. If Kristen isn't worth your time, why write about her in this article or any other?? I feel both ladies are great. Your excited about JLaw farnting.... good job.

Why did you compare Jennifer Lawrence to Kristen Stewart as the follow through for justifying Jennifer's selection as 1 of Time 100? And in this process tried to kick Kristen:s face to the gutter but it won't work for the millions of Kristen fans sround the world who openly proclaim the positive influences she's made to their lives in accepting and being proud of who they are and that "it's OK to not be OK". You portray Jennifer as being better than Kristen and yet you 're using the same Hollywood standards for celebrity and game that Kristen is running away from all these years. Kristen is not in this business for fame or celebrity status and in Hollywood this could be suicide but she would rather be hated for it than conform to what she does not believe. Let Jennifer be the darling of the ball and the media. This has no relevance as far as Kristen is concerned. In fact Kristens applauds Jennifer and is happy for her as evidenced by her reaction at the Oscars. And because of all these, Kristen is considered s hero and a role model to a number of her fans, young and old alike.

I don't think the author was putting down Kristen, simply explaining the differences in the way the public view the two actresses and how that influenced Jennifer's inclusion on the Time100 list. I agree with all of those points - I am more interested in what project's Jennifer's working on than what she had for lunch, or if she cut her hair. No one was saying Kristen is a bad person or a bad actress - but I guess people read into things what they want to see. I believe that she said she has had edgy roles, but not leading roles - which is true.

Congratulations to Jennifer Lawrence! I am so thrilled for her! She was amazing in "Silver Linings Playbook," a movie which did so much to show what it is like to face mental illness. She has also continued to remain the down-to-earth person that she is and in our society, where so much focus is on girls looking thin, Jennifer focuses on girls being healthy. Her attitude is so refreshing, and I know her future shines bright! She is truly a gifted actress with a wonderful personality to match!
