There have been a flurry of reports recently that Ozzy Osbourne has split from his wife of 31 years. TMZ wrote that Sharon Osbourne is currently living at a Beverly Hills Hotel, while Ozzy is living at a rented house several miles away. A moving van was spotted outside what appeared to be a new home for Sharon, and she was photographed without her wedding ring.
Things weren't looking good for the longtime couple, but Ozzy has since published a public update on their situation. In a Facebook post shared with over 8.3 million fans, Ozzy wrote that while a divorce is not imminent, he has in fact been struggling with a very serious -- and unfortunately, very familiar -- personal demon over the last 18 months.
On Monday night, Ozzy addressed the divorce rumors by confessing that while he's sober now, he's had a lengthy relapse into drugs and alcohol:
For the last year and a half I have been drinking and taking drugs. I was in a very dark place and was an asshole to the people I love most, my family. However, I am happy to say that I am now 44 days sober.
Just to set the record straight, Sharon and I are not divorcing. I’m just trying to be a better person.
I would like to apologize to Sharon, my family, my friends and my band mates for my insane behavior during this period………and my fans.
At 64 years old, Ozzy has fought addiction for the majority of his life. It seemed like he'd finally won the battle after his rehab stay in 2003, but as any addict can tell you, these problems never truly go away for good. In fact, a whopping 40% to 60% of people relapse after drug treatment, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
It's been a pretty rough road for the Osbournes lately. Last spring, their son Jack was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. In November, Sharon revealed that she’d had a preventative double mastectomy, and just this March, Kelly had a frightening seizure while filming an episode of E!'s Fashion Police. I can only imagine some these stresses made it even harder for Ozzy to get his life back on track.
I know from personal experience that being open and honest about addiction goes a long way towards recovery. Ozzy certainly didn't owe the public this revelation, but I truly believe that by doing so, he's helping himself. And hopefully, his marriage with Sharon.
Are you surprised to hear about Ozzy's relapse?
