8 Reasons 'The Shining' Prequel Is a Terrible Idea

The Shining"Heeeeeere's Johnny!" How could anyone possibly forget that iconic moment in film? The classic horror movie The Shining has been making headlines recently -- but for all the wrong reasons. Mostly everyone who's seen Jack Nicholson's insanely creepy performance as Jack Torrance in the 1980 flick will not likely soon forget it. And movie producers are hoping that's the case, as it seems they're working on a prequel called The Overlook Hotel.

Big news on that front: The Walking Dead former producer Glen Mazzara is in talks to write it. Ugh. Is nothing scared in Hollywood anymore? Obviously not, but still. Sometimes it's best to leave a classic a classic. It'd be a prequel to Stanley Kubrick's film and doesn't sound like it'd have much to do with Stephen King's original novel.

A prequel for The Shining might simply crash and burn. Here are eight reasons why.

1.) Stephen King won't be involved. When asked about creating a prequel without his input, he said:

I’m not saying I would put a stop to the project, because I’m sort of a nice guy. When I was a kid, my mother said, "Stephen if you were a girl, you’d always be pregnant." I have a tendency to let people develop things. I’m always curious to see what will happen. But you know what? I would be just as happy if it didn’t happen.

If we're going to see a history of the Overlook Hotel, I can't imagine them creating a story about it without King's input. Just doesn't seem right.

2.) Though Kubrick's version varied quite a bit from King's original novel, it'd be hard to think of anything relating to The Shining without his involvement too. Clearly that wouldn't be the case as Kubrick sadly passed away in 1999. His spin on the suspenseful tale made this movie many a horror fans' favorite.

3.) Like I said before, it's a classic! Don't mess with it! Come up with some original ideas, damnit!

4.) King is currently working on a Shining sequel novel entitled Doctor Sleep. If anything, maybe they can wait and film a sequel instead?

5.) The film may center around Delbert Grady, the first caretaker of the Overlook, and him massacring his family. Can they really get an entirely new horror movie out of that? No.

6.) Hannibal Rising

7.) Star Wars Episodes I-III

8.) Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd

Do you think a prequel to The Shining is a terrible or intriguing idea?
