As a Real Housewife, Kandi Burruss has always been sweet, but not all that interesting on her own ... if we're being honest. And that's pretty much exactly what her new show, The Kandi Factory, is like. It debuted on Bravo tonight, and I hate to say it, but it was beyond disappointing.
The premise alone was challenging as we've been inundated with a nonstop stream of singing competition shows in recent years. Every time a new one launches, I cringe thinking about who they could have possibly dug up that hasn't already tried out for one of the many other shows. But they always come up with someone.
Kandi came up with 16, and each week, two are pitted against one another to see who can be made into a famous singing sensation. The winner of each episode gets their song (written for them by Kandi) released and a video.
Tonight it was Lauryn, an innocent 21-year-old virgin, against Darian, an insecure gay man. Both started out sucking big time, which I'm sure will be a theme in the show so that the talents of Kandi and her staff can be showcased. As they teach them to dance and give them makeovers, we're left guessing who will be the winner after the big showcase day in which both performed in front of a live audience. We're also left wondering if any random person from the street could be turned into a singing star if only they had Kandi and company to work their magic.
Lauryn was up first and provided the only dramatic moment of the entire hour when she totally wiped out on stage. Her green shoes slipped, and down she went. To her credit, she popped right back up and handled it like a pro. Darian was up next and did his thing, which was ... fine.
Lauryn ended up winning, but by that time, I couldn't have cared less who won. Neither of them seemed to have an ounce of true star potential, and I just felt kind of sorry for Kandi and everyone involved. Kandi is truly talented, and this didn't seem to be the best use of those talents at all. Maybe the show will get better as it goes on. I'm rooting for Kandi, but that's probably not going to help.
Did you watch The Kandi Factory? Thoughts?
