Do you guys remember hearing about how Matt Damon and Michael Douglas were starring in an a Liberace biopic called Behind the Candelabra? Well, listen, if you -- like me -- were a bit ... skeptical of the casting (it totally sounded like a bizarro-world game of Clue, didn't it? Michael Douglas, at the piano, with the diamond-encrusted bolero suit!), you have GOT to see the trailer that was just released.
Steven Soderbergh is the director of Behind the Candelabra, which stars Michael Douglas as Liberace and Matt Damon as his longtime lover Scott Thorson. Interestingly, Soderbergh says multiple studios refused to finance the movie because it was, and I quote, "too gay." HBO eventually backed the project, and the movie is set to hit the small screen on May 26.
As for whether Soderbergh dialed back the gayness to appease any hesitant network executives, I'm pretty sure the answer is a big, fabulous, sequin-covered NO.
The biopic is based on Scott Thorson's tell-all book about his lengthy affair with famed pianist Liberace, which began when Thorson was 18 and Liberace was 57. This is where the trailer starts, with Matt Damon, er, Thorson gushing to Liberace over his performance. Cue Michael Douglas in full makeup, masterfully channeling Liberace with his roving-eye'd, flirtatious response: "Well this must be fate."
Things progress from there, with Liberace first hiring Thorson to drive his Rolls-Royce, then pulling him ever more deeply into his world. Things take a turn for the creepy when Liberace moves to legally adopt Thorson, then decides Scott should get plastic surgery in order to look like a younger version of him. Thorson turns to drugs, Liberace becomes resentful, and the whole relationship plays out in what I can only assume is a wonderfully splashy, trashy, '70s-styled trainwreck.
Check it out:
Dude. How completely disturbing is that line:
I want to be everything to you, Scott. I want to be your father, brother, lover, best friend.
Both Matt Damon and Michael Douglas look amazing in this (maybe particularly Matt Damon's pool-exiting torso), and it just looks like everyone went balls-out into the craziness of the story. Plus, did you spot Rob Lowe as Liberace's freaky plastic surgeon? This whole thing just seems like it's going to be ridiculously entertaining, and I can't wait to see it.
What do you think about the trailer for Behind the Candelabra?
