After going missing over the weekend, MTV Buckwild star Shain Gandee has died. Gandee's body was discovered in a vehicle along with his uncle David Gandee and a third unidentified body. According to local officials, the car was found a mile up a dirt road in Sissonville, West Virginia, and no foul play is suspected.
It's heartbreaking. Gandee went missing early Sunday morning after 3 a.m., when he told friends at a bar that he was going off-roading in his Ford Bronco. And while we don't know how much he had to drink that night, who was behind the wheel, or if any other factors were behind this incident -- I have to wonder if the MTV lifestyle played a part here.
If you haven't seen Buckwild, I can sum it up for you pretty easily. It's a reality show that follows around a group of kids from small-town West Virginia who love nothing more than drinking and getting into all sorts of trouble in the rural playground they live in. Think keg parties, squirrel hunting, mud racing, rope swinging, and all that jazz.
Whether or not Gandee was getting into any troublesome activities on Buckwild, being associated with it had to encourage a more playboy lifestyle. With a majorly thick southern accent, the 21-year-old was commonly given subtitles on the show because it was so difficult to understand him. His high school prom king, I have no doubts that Gandee quickly became a local celebrity. Could the constant cameras have influenced him to take things to a whole other level? I wouldn't be surprised.
What we do know: this is no April Fools' prank. It's heartbreaking every single time a person loses their life too soon. With a second season of Buckwild on the agenda, it'll be interesting to see whether MTV pulls the plug. In my eyes, it's the right decision.
My heart goes out to the Gandee family.
