Imagine being a celebrity and having the adoration, love, and respect of fans everywhere. Oh, and their chopped off body parts. Yeah, sometimes there's that. But at least one star doesn't seem to mind! Jared Leto, who fronts the band 30 Seconds to Mars but whom most of us will always remember as dreamy Jordan Catalano, told a radio station that a fan once chopped off her (his?) ear and sent it to him in the mail. And it came with a note that said, "Are you listening?" Wow. That's quite a sacrifice for such a lame pun. Anyway, that's not even the weirdest part of this story.
Jared told the XFM about his fan's unusual gift:
Someone cut their ear off once and sent it to me, that was very strange. A whole ear. The Van Gogh move. I never knew who it was, who's missing their ear out there.
We can only imagine that Jared, upon seeing a freshly shaved-off ear in his mailbox, screamed, fainted, and then called police. Well, we can imagine that. But that's not what actually happened.
Jared had a slightly unorthodox reaction to his fan's fleshly tribute:
I poked a hole in it and wore it as a necklace! Just don't put your entire body in a case and send it to us.
Hahah. He's joking, right? Surely, he called the cops or the nearest mental institution. There's a madman or madwoman out there chopping off ears -- and it might not even be his or her own! But somehow I don't get the feeling he's joking.
I know fans do outlandish things for their rock idols. I was one of those crazy teens once. I knew so much about a certain rock star, I found out the name of everyone in his family, including his grandmother. I then called the operator (remember those days?) and got her number. Then I called her and asked for him -- as if he would live with his grandmother. I think I did that several times. Poor old lady. But I draw the line at chopping off any part of my anatomy. Maybe that doesn't make me truly committed, but I'm okay with that.
Jared even posted a photo on Instagram of the alleged ear. He captioned it, "Are you listening?" If this is a joke, he's taking it pretty far. If it's not a joke, somewhere out there is a 30 Second to Mars fan in dire need of a hearing aid.
Would you ever chop off your ear for anyone?
