In shocking news this morning, a Real Housewives of Atlanta star is reportedly headed for a divorce. According to TMZ, Kordell Stewart has filed for divorce from his wife, Porsha Stewart.
The former football star reportedly filed March 22, according to the Fulton County Superior Court in Georgia, because the "marriage is irretrievably broken". Wow, did anyone else NOT see this coming at all?
I knew they had some issues, but nothing that seemed threatening to their marriage. We saw Porsha talking to a therapist this past week on RHOA about her miscarriage and how Kordell didn't really understand how hard it was for her. We also saw the other ladies' concern in Las Vegas that he was too controlling after Porsha refused to go to a strip club. But that aside, they really seemed in love to me and on the same page, with their traditional views on marriage and gender roles.
More from The Stir: Another 'Real Housewives' Couple Is Divorcing: OMG, It’s an Epidemic!
This is the woman who proudly calls herself the "black trophy wife". She recently told ABC, "Being a trophy wife per se is not just about your outer looks. It's about the man who has put you on the pedestal and him admiring you and thinking well enough of you to put you up there."
Their views on having children did seem to conflict a bit, but I thought they'd work through them. When he seemed relieved she wasn't pregnant, she said it was because he didn't want to put too much pressure on her to get pregnant again, and that seemed believable. You just have to wonder if her appearance on the show is what ultimately broke the marriage down. It's certainly been known to happen before. In fact, I believe this would put the tally of Housewives who have divorced at 35. Yikes!
One thing we do know is that there's no pre-nup in place for the couple. Earlier this year she took to her Bravo blog to explain her views on them:
In my opinion a marriage is a sacred union between two people coming together as one with love being that foundation -- being one in mind, body, and spirit. This means I want to agree with my husband and have like minds, I want to bond with him in the flesh (meaning anything that has to do with the natural things, whether it’s a sexual, monetary, or family issue etc.). I also want to become one spiritually with my husband so that we are equally yoked. We have the same beliefs when it comes to God and how WE have our purpose shown to us by God. So through bonding with him in mind, body, and spirit there is no place for a piece of paper to stand between us.
I wonder if she's rethinking that now?
In any case, it just goes to show once again that nobody knows what happens behind closed doors except the two people behind them ... even if the rest of your life is broadcast to the world.
Are you shocked to learn that Kordell has filed for divorce?
