Nothing Says ‘Game of Thrones’ Like a Gazillionaire Basketball Player (VIDEO)

Say What!? 8

GAme of Thrones season 3So the latest "commercial" of sorts for the season 3 premiere of Game of Thrones was just released by HBO ... and man, is it weird. Everyone, and I mean everyone, is counting down the days until March 31, 2013, when the first episode of the season airs. HBO has been releasing as many posters, teasers, and trailers as they can to give us a sneak peek at what's to come.

But after watching this one, I honestly couldn't tell if it were a practical joke or not. They picked a "celebrity" of sorts to "star" in the commercial. Sorry, I'm overusing quotations marks because I still can't get over how incredulous this whole thing is. Because they picked the wrong person to reach out to audiences who like Game of Thrones. We're nerds! Doesn't HBO know this? Why would they think a professional basketball player could possibly do anything for us? It's really quite a heart-wrenching tragedy.

I mean, they picked Carmelo Anthony to sit on the Iron Throne. Carmelo Anthony? Star NBA player? Someone who'd most likely beat Game of Thrones fans up back in high school? (I'm kidding.) (Kind of.)

Here it is:

The best comment from the YouTube page? "You know nothing Carmelo."

I wouldn't have believed this was something HBO came up with if it weren't listed under the official Game of Thrones username. I'm just not on board with having any celebrity, especially a professional athlete, endorse the series. What a weird move on HBO's part. It's a fantasy world, it's supposed to be well-disconnected from anything in ours, especially a multimillionaire who plays basketball for the New York Knicks. Folks have been apparently going back to the YouTube page to see if the video has been taken down, but alas ... it's still there.

I don't get it. If you do, please enlighten the rest of us. What a strange commercial. At least instead of getting really psyched and pumped up for season 3, which I probably can't handle much more of, this one has just left me confused and bewildered. Would love to know the reasoning behind this one!

What do you think of Carmelo Anthony starring in a Game of Thrones commercial?

Maybe he's a fan?  Maybe they're trying to convey that Game of Thrones is so good that its reaching fans beyond the original fantasy nerd readership.  It doesn't seem that awful to me.

Doesn't seem terrible to me, maybe they are trying to widen their viewing demographic? This is an amazing show that I think everyone should watch, mainly so I have more people to geek out with, lol. Anyways, nothing they do to endorse the show can change my view, I will continue watching, unless they completely f*** up the story.

Wasn't there some sort of basketball thing (naacp?) last week? Perhaps they're trying to target that audience.

But yes, it was a bit strange seeing a guy in a headband promote the iron throne.

March madness duh how dumb are you its easy to see why they used a big name basketball star to endorse any show that starts in march. Basketball needs more viewers so HBO used this ad to remind viewers.

So all GoT fans were nerds in high school? And jocks can't like reading or watching fantasy? Wooooow.

Your looking at this video from a fans aspect. You should look at it from a marketing aspect. It's brilliant, take it from a big fan of the Game of Thrones series and the NBA. I was so excited to watch this video. There trying to reach a different audience, one that is triple the size of the current audience that follows the series. The NBA has one of the largest audiences in sports. Their players are very influential, especially Carmelo Anthony, a six time NBA all star. Anyone who follows the NBA was likely to notice the competive undertones. The playoff are coming soon and their is a player who has refered to himself as King James (Lebron James). In the video they have Carmelo Anthony sitting on the Iron throne, suggesting he wants to overthrow the so called, self proclaimed king of the NBA. I think it's great, it brings Game of Thrones to a bigger spotlight on top of what it already has. I Love it!!!!
