First there was the Twilight book-to-movie trilogy. Then the Hunger Games franchise (which we've only just begun as far as the films go). Now, waiting in the wings to fill that Young Adult bestselling adaption series slot? Divergent, the first of three novels by Veronica Roth which are "set in a dystopian future" -- and will apparently star Kate Winslet! Yippee!
I must confess, I haven't read the Divergent trilogy yet, but Kate Winslet in any movie is always cause for celebration, right? And she's been cast in a role that sounds deliciously, perfectly cold-blooded and calculating.
Just in case you're as new to this whole Divergent thing as I am, here's some background info. According to a press release from Summit Entertainment (yes, the Twilight people):
DIVERGENT is a thrilling adventure set in a future world where people are divided into distinct factions based on their personalities, Tris Prior (Woodley) is warned she is Divergent and will never fit into any one group. When she discovers a conspiracy to destroy all Divergents, she must find out what makes being Divergent so dangerous before it’s too late.
Oooh! Winslet's character, Jeanine Matthews, is NOT a Divergent -- she's the leader of the Erudite, a "society devoted to a lifelong pursuit of knowledge" (sounds perfect, right?).
No trailer yet, but the premise is promising, especially now that Winslet's attached. Although I should probably read the books before I form an opinion.
Have you read the Divergent series? Do you think Kate Winslet is right for the role of Jeanine Matthews?

Why, because there's no sparkly vampires?
I'm actually kind of interested in this. I don't buy into these fad stories too often, most of them are overly-hyped drivel (yes, I have read (or attempted to read) series before I bash/praise them).
This may turn out to be exactly that. I'll have to pay a visit to the library and check it out.

I really do love the books, although i agree with shesliketx ... alot of my fav books have been ruined by tv and movie adaptations... so sad
these books are so good! they really make you think about our society and the directions it is headed (a la Hunger Games) unlike Twilight that teaches you it is perfectly natural to become engrossed in a relationship with serious codependency issues to the point that if he leaves you should try to kill yourself. Kate will be great as Jeanine! She totally has the look and can give off the feel of the character! I'm so excited for this movie and even more so for the next book!
